woah, didn’t start running until 36.
gives me some hope

Hmm, let’s see:
Average pace: 42.2 km in 2 h 36 min = 270 m/s
Estimated submaximal VO2: 270 m/s x 0.18-0.20 mL/min/kg per m/s = 49-54 mL/min/kg
Required VO2max: 49-54 mL/min/kg x 1/0.80-85 = 58-68 mL/min/kg
Yeah, pretty impressive!
Very impressive!
old people in japan have nothing better to do other than run. just look at the run splits from ironman japan.

270 m/s? That is crazy fast. Think of all the world records he could set…100m in 0.37 sec. Look out Usain Bolt…

You know what I meant to type!
Yes, I knew exactly what you meant to type. But this is ST, where little things like that have to pointed out for all to see. ![]()

Heh. I considered it a “teaching moment”. To wit: intelligent readers will be able to deduce from my post that:
-
in a competitive distance runner, the slope of the VO2 vs. speed relationship has a slope of 0.18-0.20 mL/min/kg per m/min;
-
well-trained runners might be expected to be able to maintain 80-85% of their VO2max for ~2.5 h; and
-
a VO2max of 58-68 mL/min/kg is very high - although not impossibly high - for someone 60 y old.*
*Although the highest I’ve ever personally measured for someone 60 or over is at the lowest end of that range…and I’ve had the privilege of testing a couple of older World Champion or Kona champion triathletes.
When I first saw this I said to myself " Myself there is still time left for you".
But then I started thinking about finman…
Are there splits for this guy? Timing mats at the turn arounds veryifing? I will have to google.
No finman here!!! He did it. Great job!
Also amazing is that he trained 30K per day. That kind of ‘get fast or get hurt’ volume would cripple many half his age.

But unfortunately all the smart readers had already worked out that it was an impressive performance, leaving your teaching moment rather futile and self-indulgent.

Now, now, don’t get uppity. Just smile and thank the good doctor for blessing us with his brilliance.

Ah, you’re just pissed that:
-
you didn’t think of it first, and
-
your VO2max isn’t high enough to support such a performance.
After all, why else would you take after me for just thinking out loud (in type)? ![]()
(BTW, part of my motivation for doing so is that I have a long-standing goal of “60 at age 60”…don’t know if I’ll make it, but it is a goal nonetheless.)

I’ve got 10 y and probably about 5 mL/min/kg to go, so I’m not giving up hope yet. Just in case, though, I’ll be sure to remember your kind offer. ![]()

Well…if that falls through, he can always change it to mean 60 minutes (for a 40K TT) at age 60…which would probably be a “shoe-in” ![]()
