North East ST'ers: Feb "Tour de Ski"

Thanks, but why do I get this?

I’m on the other side of the country so I’d rather enter online.

I think Catamount Nordic center in Williston has a speed skating rink. At least they used to. Google catamount outdoor and willistion. You should be able to find the site.

Hey man, the granola classic crowd can head to the CSM and do back to back 9 hour days of ski touring:-). The skate ski crowd will head to LP for a race

That’s last years. Unless I got a free entrance this year since my name is on the confirmation list:-)

Thanks Dev for the lessons and the workout. Goodway to kick the 2007 ATP off. It was a long drive home I had to stop at every serice station from Ottawa to Rochester to stretch.

Penguin is a killer running. You almost need crampons and a guide rope. Hitting it at the 25k mark on the ski will be very painful. Yes there a reason why they call it “the penguin”.

I’ll only do the IMLP and HIMNFLD double if you sign up for both. However, I might just go over to NFLD for the kitchen party.

I can’t imagine getting away with the LP + Ironman 70.3 NFLD double. I’ll be taking the family for a Rockies trip 10 days after we return from LP!

Glad you made it home safely and your 2007 ATP kicked off well. Now remember:
All motions initiated from core from biggest to smallest muscles (whip motion) no stopping with hands at hip, follow right through and maintain momentum head position bend at ankles recovery leg comes in “almost clicking” ankles
If you can work on those 5 points betweem now and your xczone.com Masters camp, you should make huge progress before the “Tour de Ski”

OK, if anyone wants some free XC coaching, I can make myself available in the Gats next weekend…I’m actually a certified Cross Country Canada XC coach.

Dev

Yes, registration for 2007 hasn’t opened yet. Not everyone is as keen for winter to begin as you seem to be

Does that coaching include classic technique for any of us granola lovers?

I only coach classic to kids 4-12 cause they have to learn it:-) There are much better coaches for classic including Kurt on this thread. I’ll stick to something that I can explain well and for which I can pick apart flaws and offer constructive suggestions for improvement

Dev,
Dont mean to hijack here, but have you ever thought about holding a cross country ski clinic somewhere in the Northeast?
I tried it once a few years ago,and loved it. I wasnt very good at it though.
Do you think there might be some interest in this?

Trevor, don’t laugh, the XC Ottawa team sometimes train with 5 lb ankle weights. That will pretty well beat any Powercrank workout :-).

Catmandu, I’ve been thinking of holding an “XC skiing for triathletes” camp. My main problem is the lack of weekends available. Since I run a kids program, as soon as the snow hits, I am booked until mid March, and I have to make an exception for the LP Loppet and leave the kids to another coach on that weekend. Aside from that, any races have to be local.

Seriously though, there are much better coaches out there. I strongly recommend the XC zone camps and if you can’t get there, then get their instructional DVD’s (www.xczone.tv).

Thanks. That makes sense. I’m planning on being Ottawa a few times in the next couple of months and might want to get some racing in. I remember hearing about that race when I was growing up and have always wanted to try it.

Winter started in Alberta a few weeks ago. It was mid-season type conditions near Lake Louise yesterday. Well, I heard it was mid-season. It was my second time doing any x-c skiing out here. Good thing too, if I’m even thinking of that race I’ll need to improve considerably!

Easy, Dev.

It’s the 7+ hours on the go that builds the base for . . . you know!

Dont’ knock it!

Fleck

P.S. Actually with my sensitive back, I can’t even classic ski around the block these days. Skating seems to be OK, though.

Fleck…as we both know, longer is not always better. I think both you and I have both said that there is so much more to triathlon than Ironman and people should wake up and try and race some shorter stuff rather than getting obsessed with plodding for a long time.

You can do lots of things that build base…but I’m not talking about building base, I’m talking about racing…LP 50K Loppet is a race and one of the toughest around with >4500 ft of vertical climbing and desending…its just a different challenge from the ski marathon

Agreed.

I have always been so grateful that we live where we live. That we actually have these off season diversions, whatever they are, that you actually look forward to. That have their own season and focus. Keeps things fresh and in perspective not just year round, but year to year for many years. It would seem so odd to me to be slogging away on the bike for 4 - 5 hours in Jan/Feb.

ottawa has the white stuff already? i would enjoy getting pointers after getting some skating gear last season and puffing around kawartha nordic with cerveloguy. i would like to get up to the gatineaus this season too. let me know if it goes dev.

I’m actually a certified Cross Country Canada XC coach (I think Paulo will have a heart attack…)

Dev,
Funny how you called me out on the Forum for referring to you, in an unrelated thread like this, in more or less the same terms as you’re referring to me here. Like I said, funny…

Paulo, your point is right on and I apologize. The offending post was not required and has been edited.

“recovery leg comes in “almost clicking” ankles”

Are you sure about this one? I’m good friends with Torin Koos (U.S. ski team member, two time Olympian '02,'06). He tells me this is “old school”. No offense, it’s what I was taught too, but he’s saying that the World Cup guys are no longer bring that recovery heel in so close. There just isn’t time in the new quicker tempo skiing style. He’s saying you just get that foot down and on to it with full weight transfer soon, don’t fuss with the “heels in” thinking. FYI.
