Nor & Central CA riders -- where would you go

…for three day riding weekend within four hours (more or less) of the Bay Area. Stipulations are:
–Mix of routes such as 60-100 miles with a lot of climbing and/or a 125+ mile rolling ride
–Not totally in the sticks; must be near cold beer, decent food and a roof to sleep under (bonus points for a town with good bars that would have UFC fight on)
–Not Marin, Napa, Sacramento or Tahoe

Thanks for any & all suggestions.

Well, it’s a little more than 4 hours, but I’d probably go down to Dan and Monty’s place.

Ha - I think you need an invitation for that. Should have also mentioned somewhere under 100 degrees would be desirable.

Angels Camp

-or-

Anywhere in the East Bay - Livermore or Pleasanton have good access to rollers, climbs, wineries, beer and UFC.

Angel’s Camp is a good thought. The three of us going collectively live in Walnut Creek, Berkeley and Napa. So somewhere further from home where we typically wouldn’t get to ride is what we’re aiming for.

here you go, there’s even a weekend in September being planned: http://forum.slowtwitch.com/…_Sept_29-30_P1402773

If you search mapmyride.com for my routes, I’ve got a few up, and will have more as I’m moving them over from another mapping site.

Great sports bar in downtown Porterville, or you can plan it right and go to the casino and watch a fight live!

Yeah, I’ve often thought about angels camp for a training weekend - Sierra Century starts in Murphy’s - just up the road. I hear that was super tough this year. I’m certain you can find UFC there, too. Certain.

Martin,

We’re doing a Napa-Healdsburg-King’s Ridge-Napa ride in September so going to stay away from that part now. Why is Gold Country dangerous? Too much traffic?

Snaps - have you posted routes on MapMyRide? If yes, under what username or keyword?

yup, under username snaps10

search for city of springville, ca and you should find mine as well.

Humboldt, Ca. Would probably stay in Eureka, as I know of a bar where you can get the UFC fights lined out.
Endless routes, just ask Mike Pigg, this is where he developed his world renowned work ethic. Everything can be made into circles so you start and end at home without any additional travel time. Lots of microbreweries and other good places to hang out in the evenings.

Closer to 5 hours north from the bay, depending on traffic. Pretty windy out on the coast, but better inland.
Drivers are respectful, at least to me.

Let me know if you want any more info.
Chris

Depends on when you’re in these parts but the beginning of October offers you this:

One of the best centuries in the state because you get to roll thru scenic National Forest areas that you normally couldn’t ride since there’s no place to get food/water.

If you’re feeling HUGE there’s an option that’ll give you 14,000 ft of climbing over 124 miles.

Might have to put that one on the calendar!

last tri in 83 and I are gonna team time trial the 13 mile climb in the middle…he just doesn’t know it yet
.

That sounds like fun – not!

I’m signed up and training, baby!

I would also second Humboldt County as a contender. God knows there are plenty of climbing opportunities there. Also, consider taking a leisurely spin through Avenue of the Giants, a dense canopy of redwoods. As I recall, that stretch was not too hilly though, but beautiful.

On the beer angle, Go to any BevMo store and look through the microbrews section, and you will see that there are plenty of offerings that come from Humboldt County. They do take their beer seriously up there. Six Rivers Brewing Company in McKinleyville is a good brewpub that has good food and great beer. I could imagine the clientele would watch UFC.

Humboldt is pulling ahead…

Quincy, CA or a little further north to Greenville. Site of the Indian Valley Century. Bike along Indian Valley up to Antelope Lake. Awesome views, mellow town, and a high likelihood of a UFC friendly populace.
