Noisey drivetrain help

I finally broke down and bought a new cassette and chain for my road bike. I run FSA cranks. I had a SRAM 89(?) chain and DA cassette and it was quite but worn enough that I was getting a skip under heavy load on ocassion as well as somewhat sloppy shifting for DA. Today I put on a new DA chain and new Ultegra cassette and am getting a clacking sound of sorts under pressure, primarily in the small chain ring - especially out of the seat type pressure. I think everything is adjusted well, all shifts are perfect and quiet and the clacking sound only come under pressure. It is not the normal “I need to shift drivetrain noise.” Last night I took out the BB and cleaned everything up, install is fool proof with Ultegra BB. I am kind of confused by this, any ideas?

Could it be a stiff link or not quite correctly inserted pin where you connect the chain?

Its hard to tell without looking at your bike. The packaging between a 9speed D/A and a 10speed D/A is similar; perhaps you got a 10speed by mistake?

Also, make sure that you greased the threads of the B/B before installing it; or that will be a clacking problem in the near future.

I’ll check the box of the chain to make sure . . .

I alway use thread tape on the BB, does a good job of avoiding the dreaded BB creak, especially since I have to ride about 1/2 mile on a sandy/gravel road to get to hardtop.

If your chain and cassette were that worn, it’s possible that your chainring is worn out as well. You say that you hear the sound in the small ring, and not so much in the big one? That would make sense, if you spend most of your time in the small ring it will receive more wear.
