unless I missed it on their website, I didn’t notice any steel frames. A guy I ride with has an obviously older steel model. When did they discontinue steel, if in fact that is true. and why?
Carbon sells, steel doesn’t. I’d also be curious to find out what the margin is on steel relative to carbon and aluminum.
I believe that’s true. I have a steel Prodigy, 2002 model. I love it.

I bought one of the last SuperProdigy steel bikes available in Canada in my size about a month ago. Cervelo stopped production of the SuperProdigy about a year ago, and it seems to have been for cost reasons (the bike was too costly to make). It’s too bad, as I love mine.

they had the superprodigy model last year, but it was discontinued for this year. might be a combination of a lower demand for steel bikes, but i’ve also been told that steel prices have been on the rise as well. it didn’t seem that cervelo rules out bringing it back in future years, but they’ve probably had to put a lot of focus into the development of the p3 carbon and the soloist carbon.
there might be a few places where you still might be able to get a frame or complete bike, plus every once in a while a used prodigy (previous version of steel bike) or superprodigy might show up on ebay. i got a frame from cycles bikyle in the philly area earlier this year and built it up. it is a fantastic bike, handles great, and the ride is like butter. what size are you looking for? there might be a few online dealers with limited stock.
Cathy, that looks just like the one my buddy rides. Still don’t quite understand the cost issue though. Isn’t steel a more prevalent material?
I agree it’s not as sexy as carbon or ti, but to eliminate altogether from your product line seems extreme.
any steel bike i’ve seen always has nice clean simple lines.
i guess simple doesn’t sell either. (i think fleck would agree with that assessment as it relates to training.)
Mine is the regular Prodigy, not the superprodigy. Can’t remember what the difference was, but Gerard will know. And I believe it wasn’t much more than the P2K, but I don’t remember for sure. It still rides like a dream. In the photo, he is relaxing in France after taking on the cobbles last July.

That looks like an European landscape not US, where was it taken, Cathy?
Oops, just read your following reply! IT’s a HE? All bikes are female, did you not know?
My bikes are guys!
It was the little town at the end of the second section of cobbles, about 20K from Wasquehal.
Stage 3 - Tuesday July 6: Waterloo - Wasquehal, 210 km
Isn’t that BElguim then? or just near to the border?
France. We started the day in Belgium, but rode into France.
Your seat is too high.
Your irrigation ditch needs to be weeded.
they had the Prodigy, the Super Prodigy and the Renaissance
the Renaissance was the cream of the crop and a price tag to match.
the Prodigy was the economy version and the few Prodigy’s that were made with the Renaissance tubes by chance.
The Super Prodigy was suppossedly made using the Renaissance tubes but with Ultegra build up instead of Dura Ace.
I have a 2004 SuperProdigy and love it. It is VERY nice and VERY steel.
You can see them here: http://www.cervelo.com/history/classics2.html
Due to an error at the warehouse, a few 2002 Prodigies were built with Renaissance tubes. This resulted in very light yet durable frames, and these “SuperProdigies” became quite sought-after. While we were aware of this, we did not make a big fuss about it and we sold them as regular Prodigies. It was only after some people started weighing their Prodigies that our customers figured out that some Prodigies were even more special than others. Seeing the success of these SuperProdigies, we decided to make this version the regular version for 2003 and 2004.
hey cathy,
from what i recall, the difference between the prodigy and superprodigy is that the superprodigy uses the same tubing as the renaissaince in the front triangle, which resulted in a lighter frame than the original prodigy. story goes is that cervelo received the renaissance spec’d tubing instead of the tubing they used for the prodigy by mistake and just went ahead to build them up and sell them as prodigies, instead of sending them back. some people figured this out and the ensuing demand resulted in the evolution to the superprodigy for about the same price.
i agree, it is a blast to ride.

Red bar tape and pedals? Did you paint his nails?
I’ve got an '01 Prodigy and, like others have mentioned, it is a sweet bike. It’s by far the most comfortable road bike I’ve ever owned. I can’t imagine ever selling it.
No more red tape. Now a greyish-silver to match the logo and back triangle thing. Very fast bike, especially downhill. He’s definitely majorly bumming to not be riding the roads of France right now.
