One of the team members was in my store last week… he mentioned that it looks like there is going to be an announcement in the near future of the sponsor=WALMART.
I think a good “All American” sponsor is a good choice to replace USPS and how many sponsors like that are there? WALMART is synonomous with “America” and could make a great sponsor. I have no idea if this what will indeed play out, but it could be a good sponsorship.
I just have a gut feeling the uniforms would end up looking even more like Nascar uniforms
Sounds to me like he got a little slap on the wrist for speaking too soon. A new sponsor wouldn’t want to be “outed” when no one is paying attention. More likely to be announced during the Tour or right after. As a matter of fact, I can’t imagine USPS would be too thrilled either, given that their sponsorship doesn’t stop until the end of the year. I can just hear Mr Ligget now, “The soon to be Walmart boys are tearing the field apart!” That make USPS real happy. Though, I have a hard time believing it’s Walmart that’s taking over. Walmart presented by Berry Floor? I guess stranger things have happened. Dell sounds more likely to me, but how would I know?
How about McDonald’s. All american with an international reach (more hamburgers sold per capita in France than any other country i think I heard. Instead of uniforms they will wear ronal McDonald noses, shoes, and wigs over their helmets and get happy meals at the aid stations.
The team has been sponsored by one US quasi-governmental entity, maybe another arm of the US government can pickup the sponsorship. The US Army seems to have a big advertising budget, maybe they can sponsor the team. Wouldn’t THAT go over big in France!
Not that the Army would be a bad sponsor, but the USPS train at the front of the peloton often reminds me of a bunch of F-18s flying in formation. Air Force would be cool, but then again, I am biased.
