Is it just me? I’ve never seen it without the ‘google’ image above the search textbox.

Strange… Here’s mine. It has been that way for a couple of days now.
I’ve been having trouble with Google for the past 3-4 days. Some days it won’t even load. Same with Google-owned sites youtube and blogspot/blogger pages. The problem has been intermittent, with Google working fine one minute, but then nothing the next.
Perhaps it’s a problem with IE.

get firefox and you’ll no longer have these and other problems (e.g., erectile dysfunction syndrome).
I see what it is. In IE the logo is special and says ‘make google your homepage’. Google is already my homepage. When you click on the logo a special script runs and makes it your homepage which causes the logo to disappear. In firefox they don’t appear to be running that script/logo campaign.
