No Alcohol January 2025

Alright, I’m in. I drink dramatically less than my pre-triathlon days, maybe once or twice a month at a social occasion, but I’ve been considering a sober stint to see how it feels. Let’s get it!

Sounds like you’re not the target audience then?

Please don’t shit on those who do, OK?

People have been known to infiltrate @Dr_Cupcake 's annual thread to ‘preach’ “if you’re a serious athlete, you shouldn’t be drinking alcohol AT ALL, anyway

Fuck that noise

I am in!

2024 has actually been a very sober year for me. Took January off, then April & May and then 2-3 weeks leading into Ironman Frankfurt were very NA.

But the last month or so has been a havoc on red wine and too much work and off diet.

Last year I read this book (below) and although many of us are not really feeling that we are in “recovery”, the book shares a LOT of good insights on what drives alcohol dependency and obviously how Mindfulness can help a lot to stay off the booze, making it much more manageble and sustainable. There are guided exercises (audio for download) that I found very useful.

I’m in.

But can’t remember the last drink I had to be honest. Maybe last May? I just can’t stop myself if I start, so I don’t start…

Got a bottle of champagne for last night, but the wife was ill so we headed to bed early anyway! Might be good for 2026 LOL.

OH says he is also doing Dry January with me this year. Yesterday I asked him if he was going to finish off the wine that was open; his response “no I was going to save it for tomorrow”. So we’ll see if he even remembers he’s doing Dry January

We’re here!!!

I’m in! Good night to 2024. In some ways it was the best year of my life with fun, adventures, travels, and more. In other ways it was awful since I got knocked down by a bike crash (while on the ride of my life in Ecuador). I must say, broken ribs are no joke! I’m ready for a reset, recenter, and healthy kick off to 2025. Woot!

BTW @Dr_Cupcake your post is beautifully written! Kudos in so many ways!

A bad bike accident with TBI in 2017 led me to quit (6+ months of bad short term memory and terrible anxiety left me with zero desire to do anything to detract from mental faculties.) I’ve had zero desire to drink alcohol since. Can’t say it had any measurable change on my health (too many other changes going on, especially turning 50), but now I see no positives of alcohol. Only negative is awkward social events where family (including our adult children) drink what I now consider too much.

So, I’d encourage you all to give it a serious try. If nothing else, fewer calories and more money in your pocket. But don’t do like I’ve done and switch to energy drinks. I consume 3-400 mg of caffeine every single day. That can’t be good either.

Day One, everybody! Hello and welcome to your first challenge of the new year!

Wednesday Scaries don’t have the same ring to their Sunday counterpart, but this was definitely an easy day for me to avoid drinking because how dare our calendar put the last two holidays of the year smack int he middle of a workweek. Trying to set up the rest of my work week, sorting my team group workout schedule for the rest of Winter, and starting to think about de-holidaying my condo before company arrives in a couple of weeks occupied the majority of my day. Couch snuggles with my pup while watching a very exciting Peach Bowl occupied the rest of it.

Drinks I’m loving right now for the Dry Season, in no particular order:
Polar Black Cherry Seltzer. It’s like the angel food cake version of Dr Pepper
Celestial Seasonings Tension Tamer herbal tea. A hug in a mug.
Mulled hot cider. This is a bit of a guilty pleasure, but a good dessert beverage when I really shouldnt be reaching for YET ANOTHER chocolate bar that I brought home with me from one of my various trips this year.

Onward!

Sounds like a productive and healthy day!

Started boring today with just lite tonic water.

Day one down.

The holidays have left my sleep patterns disturbed and my normal nutrition has gone to crap. Looking forward to a normal nigjts sleep!

Easy peasy today. I’ll be enjoying these two treats after dinner for the next little bit. Highly recommend them both to anyone who likes dessert or dark chocolate.

Count me out. I basically did this back in 1991 when I vowed to not drink until my Kona qualifier in August. I kept that vow but I raced worse in 1991 than I had in 1990.

@gonzobob - just need to understand: Did you come back to ST after 8 years gone, to write THAT :point_up:t2:

God bless you brother …

Day 6 done for me. My RHR is creeping down and I definitely feel less puffy.

I stocked up on Athletic Brewing and a big pack of Guinness 0.0 before the holidays. I don’t actually buy alcoholic beer for the house anymore, and have started getting my cycling friends into the Athletic Brewing stuff. It amazes me that it costs me more to buy direct from AB than from the grocery stores around me. How does that work?!

Shipping / margins are weird.

I’m intrigued by Almave. Anybody had it before?

Ecuador chocolate is THE BEST. GIMME.
