How come no one here is on (that I know of) or considers Nimble wheels over the H3 and other super light wheels? I have ridden many miles on the Fly and they were quite nice…does the tri world hate Nimble and only love Zipp, Hed, and Renn?
I know that Bunnyman is a fan of the Nimble Fly.
I ride nimble crosswinds for IM and some 1/2 IM, then hed3 + hed3d (clinchers) elsewhere (for cost primarily). Though I’ve ridden my hed3 + hed3d in most of my races lately, including IMAZ and all 3 of this year’s 1/2’s.
I also ride tufo’s on those nimbles and I hate cervelos.
So, I’m not a real ST’er
I ride a pair of Nimble Crosswinds with my Softride Powerwing 700. I ridden the bike and wheels since 1999.

Dude, are you Matt Lauer?
Sold a set of HED3’s…bought a set of Nimble Crosswinds…hated them…sold them…bought 2 sets of HED3’s.
A buddy of mine did the same thing!
Why didnt you like the Nimble Crosswinds?
I’ve ridden crosswinds since '99, no problems even in the winds of Lanzarote. They work for me.
yeah, i am also curious what it was about the nimble crosswinds that you didn’t like. and what it was your buddy didn’t like.
Nimbles are the great. David at Nimble is a very passionate engineer.
I think the two things that hurt them are as follows:
-
Direct Sales. Not being able to get them in a shop turns off some people.
-
Lack of pro riders using them. This also goes for road cycling, as well.
I don’t know if they sponsor any pros, and I haven’t asked if their Fly rim is UCI legal. For a low price, you can have a wheel nearly as light as an ADA (in the Fly) with a considerably easier time servicing them.
Maybe I should try and pimp these guy a bit harder.
I have had a Crosswind front that I have used with my Renn 575 for three years for TTs and tris and really like it. I would have trouble controlling the front of the bike with an H3, hence trying out the Crosswind. I have recently bought a rear also (long wait for Campag cassette body hub) to use on disc unfriendly days.
Bunnyman, what is an ADA?
ADA wheels are some serious hardware.
You have seen them or Lightweight (which are very, very similar) on most of the pros’ climbing bikes.
If I ever run Campag again, I want an ADA bottom bracket bearing.
Lets see…its been about 6 years since I used them. I found that they were flexy…I know its hard to beleive but I had a problem, and lots of my training buddies saw this riding behind me, that when I shifted or hit the pedals really hard the rear would flex enough to hit the brake pads. They felt very soft to me. I like the stiffness of the HED3’s. They’ve always felt very rock solid. Remember, I’m 6-3 and 173 lbs, very long legs, 36" inseam, and 180mm cranks. The bike I was on at the time was a custom Tiemeyer TT frame. Again…only by feel, they felt slower then the HED3’s. BTW - my training buddy felt the same way. He got very involved with the people at Nimble and called them a bunch. He even sold his disc to use a nimble on the front and rear…he ended up going back to a disc and HED3s.
THanks, Doug.
If I ever run Campag again…
Heretic, come back away from the dark side ;-).
I think you and your friends are full of crap
I’m 6’2", 200-210 and never felt like my nimbles were flexy. The only reason I got rid of mine is because I went from a 650 to a 700 bike.
Great wheels…I just think some people are waaaaaaaay too nitpicky (this isn’t directed at you zippy).
Why in the world were you riding 650s if you are 6’-2"? You must have looked like you were on my daughter’s bike
perhaps the smaller 650’s are a little stiffer than the larger 700’s
.
because I’m dum and didn’t know any better
.
that’s a valid point…I just thought of that as well. Maybe somebody should give me a pair of 700’s to try out for a year or two.
Yep…I’m VERY picky. NO one touches my bikes, except me. The last guy that touched my bike ended up in the hospital : ) All my equipment has to be perfect!
I hated the Nimbles!! : )
