Nimble Crosswind (1)

I ride Nimble Crosswind wheels when racing. I have found them to be very unstable in STRONG crosswinds. The first time I rode them in Hawaii IM I almost lost it after the turn-around in a very strong crosswind going around 60+km/hr. I later learned to stay very relaxed in those conditions and try to just rest my hands on the aerobars rather than hold them. This is very hard to do because your natural tendency is to try and manage the situation. I’m thinking of just using a light low spoke count front wheel the next time I go there. Any comments from others using Nimbles??

Absolutely, under no conditions use a crosswind on the front (maybe not on the rear either) in Kona.

I calm conditions they are fine, but like any other trispoke - hard winds make them unstable.

Don’t believe any hype about “less side area” or whatever

I’ve ridden all the top wheels and currently use a 404 with a disk

I have a set of Nimble Crosswinds which I used at Honu 1/2 this year - course is the northern 1/2 of worlds, turn around at Hawi. The winds were not that bad, so I stayed on course with my Nimbles and rode well based on my conditioning. But, on a windy day here in Austin they’ll catch the wind just like any rim. There are websites that show how much wind these and 404s and 808s, etc. catch. I’ll use mine again unless it’s windy.

I’ve used a crosswind on the rear both times I’ve done Hawaii. Although the winds were pretty bad ('02, '04) I never thought that the nimble was a bad choice. The Nimble Fly works great for the front on crazy windy courses.
