Nike Zoom Fly and Tri?

I did.

Working it from my end. I’m not in brand, sponsorship, OR marketing, so my movement through the contact maze is slow and pretty convoluted.

Lars, and others that have used any of these shoes,

How have you found these for races (IM & 70.3 distance) with some off-road running. Obviously not for twisty / turning single track etc, but for hard-ish packed trails - ie Wanaka, (maybe) Roth etc.

Cheers,

Adrian

The back heel material on the regular zoom fly is a lot thicker than the 4%, so your foot physically sits closer to the toe of the shoe. I had to size up from a 10.5 4% to an 11 zoom fly.

I find the zoom fly great for training runs 4:30 and under, but slower than that and I’ve drifted back to the flynit lunar which was my regular training shoe before I bought into the whole vapour fly thing (and wow, not cheap to buy into). Had to get the zoom fly since the vaporfly is just so damn delicate I have to keep them sealed up in a vacuum bag in a cool dark environment to nurse them along to the next race day, otherwise I’d use them for all my training.

You might want to try the Zoom Fly SP. It’s basically the same shoe as the Zoom Fly with a translucent woven nylon upper. I find they’re a lot more breathable and less hot than the regular Zoom Flys. I use them in training and like the upper much better.

The Zoomfly SP is a textile upper based on the Vaporfly, so its basically a Zoomfly midsole with a Vaporfly upper. Also, I recommend going .5 up in the Zoomfly SP because the textile upper is not as supple as the standard model.

They will work fine on gravel and hard-packed single track. But they can get a little slippery on wet trails.
I used VF 4% on Norseman 2017 where the last 17 km is up a moutain, and the last 5 km is on a rocky trail. It was not ideal on the trail, but not so bad that I would change to other shoes which I had available (and I got one of the fastest run splits and would do the same shoe-choice again).

Awesome, goodness - if they survived and were fine at Norseman then they’ll be fine for me at Wanaka. Appreciate the reply Lars.

I bought the Vaporfly 4% to run a marathon next month and so far they are holding up great.

I am also planning to use them in triathon so good to read they can be used in not pure road conditions as some triathlons may include offroad sections. However the upper mesh seems so thin and really not that flexible as I am worried for transitions it will tear when putting on the shoes. I would off course use elastic laces but still in the search of a fast transition you may pull a little harder and I am afraid the shoe might tear.

Anybody with any experience in putting on the vaporfly in transition with elastic laces?

I just went for a run in my for first time today and had the same question as you, getting them fit with elastics will be interesting.

Def a different feeling shoe, its the first none Hoka shoe i have run in in the last 4-5 years.

Getting mine Tuesday! Was wondering which laceswoild be best. I’ve been using the cheaper elastic lace but might go “high end” and get the xtenex laces since they’re more like real laces with how they can be adjusted to fit each lace hole. Makes getting them perfect take a bit but might be worth it.

Yea same, for some reason it seems like its going to be harder to figure out, but maybe I am being dramatic. Will work on this week.

I’ve only used them once in a race so far, but my usual Lock Laces worked fine. I’ve been careful to loosen them up when I’m not wearing them but slipping them on in T1 didn’t feel like it stressed the material much.

I don’t have them in my hand so can’t comment about the difficulty but with what you’re saying it looks like it might be a longer process! Looks like xtenex has run specific laces that make it easier to adjust. I hated having to pull both ends when I used them a few years ago. Now seems easier to adjust on the fly. No pun intended.

Hi Timothy,

Quick question : did you get the same size Adios boost 3 and Zoom fly? Any input regarding size variation between these two shoes would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Elliot

I use 41 1/3 EU (US 8) in adidas adios 3, and I used 41 in Nike Zoom Fly.
