Nike Vaporfly and Alphafly Runners - what shoes do you train in?

Do you wear your Vaporfly or Alphafly for all of your runs (shorter easy, shorter fast intervals, longer easy, longer race sim)? Or do you where some other shoes for some of your runs - maybe save the Vaporfly or Alphafly for just the fast runs? If you don’t where the Vaporfly or Alphafly all of the time, what other shoes do you where for runs, and for what runs?

I use a daily trainer shoe for most of my runs, currently Skechers Go Runs. If I do something up tempo or with intervals, I use my old pair of Next%’s, which I retired from racing after 100 miles. They still feel really good and have held up well, currently at 175 miles.

When my race Next%’s get higher mileage, they’ll replace my old Next%, and the cycle will repeat.

I use Zoom Fly 3 for all training. Vapor Fly 4% for races only.

Zoom X Invincible for slow runs.

Zoom Fly 3 for most runs. The Zoom Fly 4 should be releasing soon.

I only use the Vaporfly for racing and maybe one long run before a marathon.

Vaporflys only for key workouts close to race day and in races. In training I like a wide rotation of shoes, currently Clifton 7, Rincon, Peg 37, RC Elite 2, Carbon X2 and Terrex Speed

Edit because work interfered earlier: I think the Vaporflys lose their race day pop quickly and so I try to keep them fresh. For me personally they’re also terrible easy or long run shoes.

I bought 4 pairs of VF 4% which were on sale for 125chf ($125). I am onto the second pair. First ones did around 1600km (1000miles) but were totally trashed. Current pair on similar mileage, but in better condition as more running on treadmil.

Biggest advantage for training in VF 4% is I get injured much less and I find I recover much faster after runs

With mileage, they do get slower as they lose some bounce, but still goo to run in

Nike Pegasus Turbos use a very similar rubber compound to the Vaporflys and definitely the closest feeling shoe I can find to them. They don’t make them anymore but I bought several pairs to stockpile off Ebay.

Saucony Speed and a few Hoka models (Mach 4 and Clifton 1 reissue - still have a few pairs of these which I bought in bulk!) are my training shoes for non race day runs.

I use Skechers Razor for my training. I keep hearing Alphaflys getting better reviews than Vaporflys. I’m torn.

My Razors are light AF at 6.4oz. I keep hearing an extra oz in the Alphas won’t matter bc of the bounce.

I’m wondering on tired legs what will work best lighter (VF) or bouncier (AF)?

Specializing in IM 70.3 for reference.

Maybe for some, but not for me. I -love- my vapors, but I cannot use alphas. Don’t know why, but my achilles hurts more in them and the bottoms of me feet go numb in them.

This is a great question but I’ve given up and just use vapourflys for all my running. My legs are fine the following day no matter what type of session I’m doing. Was using Pegasus Turbos and tried the Tempo speed but hated them, too unstable. Managed to grab some discounted vapourflys which were good value. Even after they’ve lost their pop they’re still a great shoes, light, comfortable and I find them stable

I use many pairs depending on the run.

Old vaporfly/next for tempo/speed work
Peg turbo and zoom fly 3/flyknit
NB Rebel
ASICS Novablast
Skechers razor 3

I tested new Alphas vs new Next%’s, and I didn’t like the Alphas as much. I like to vary my foot gait a little on my longer runs, and it felt like the Alphas have a very specific sweet spot for foot strike in the forefoot. The bounce is pretty incredible though.

Interesting. Do you notice a big performance boost and bounce from the VF?

Hoka Arahi’s for everything. Gives me the bit of support I need.

Saucony Speed.

I use the Nike Tempo Next% in training and race in Alphaflys. Maybe a key workout or two in the Alphas before raceday. I dont use the Tempo exclusively in training, but maybe 1 or 2 runs a week. They do a great job replicating the Alphas

I use the Alphafly for all of my outside runs on hard surfaces and my regular Pegasus on the treadmill

Works really well to have the carbon plate shoe to help cushion the impact of the harder surfaces, especially for long runs

In theory that is what they were going for. I think they did a crap job though. That shoe is super heavy and it’s nothing like the Alphafly. I wore them twice and hated them versus the speed.
