How come white kids become both Black and Chinese in the commercials. Not that I care but it is kind of funny.
Yeah, I wondered about this too. Like, couldn’t they have used a little black girl to become a black female sprinter in the commercial?
They turned a Chinese guy into Lance Armstrong. It’s all about diversity baby!
I thought it was an underlying message that said it is okay for a young person to have a hero that is different than they are. That you don’t always have to root for (or look up to) only “your own kind”.
IMO, those Nike commercials are way ahead of society.
Branching off sideways … I like the microsoft commericals that show kids dreaming of being professionals in areas that aren’t usually associated with their “race” (i.e., the black kid that dreams of being an astronaut). People (and society as a whole) often limit and pigeonhole themselves (and others like them) into groups based upon the expectations of others. I like commercials that show the world that it’s perfectly acceptable for an Asian kid to dream to be something other than a math geek or classical musician and a black kid can grow up to be a tech geek.
Don’t think that young kids don’t pick up on society’s expectations for them based solely on superficial characterisitics. Good going for companies that advertise differently. Those subtle messages may have more impact than one realises.
