Nice Bike... is that your car?

How many people fit into the catagory of having a bike worth more than their car? Somehow I think this is much more prominant in the MTB/college level cycling community, but I’m still interested with all those nice bikes on this forum.

(By the way my car is still worth more than my bike…more as a result of the fact that my bike is not worth that much than that I have a nice car)

I got 1 car (1989) and 3 bikes (racing, road, off-road) and each bike is worth more than my car. And I was a college student a long time ago.

My last bike cost more than i payed for my current car 1982 320i BMW
.

Niether my car nor my bike are relativly speaking, that expensive. I drive a 1999, Toyota Corolla and I ride a 6 year old Cervelo Erye Road bike with Ultegra gruppo. They both serve my needs very well and I see no need in having anything more expensive on either front in the near future.

Yup, I’m in the college level cycling group.

bike : $2000 Sampson

car: '91 Ford Escort wagon (they’re so hot right now) $800

I guess it’s all about priorities…

I agree there is no need for anything more (I own a 1998 Honda Civic…as a current college student it’s the first car I’ve bought with my own money  and I don’t plan on replacing it for many years) As a second question how many of those who have an older car have a foreign car? My previous was a 1981 Peugot 505 (It’s now my brother’s).

I bet my car is worth about $6000 blue book. A dented up 1997 Subaru Impreza wagon (the "sport’ one with the fake hood scoop for full Dukes of Hazard cache’) with 60,000 miles on it.

It is 100% dialed though- new suspension, full-on preventive maintenance, oil change every 3,000 miles with Castrol GTX and usually pretty clean. I paid cash for it new in '97.

It’s a good car. Cheap and durable. Now that it has some dents, I don’t give a shit- I just plow into shit.

I meant to take a picture, but didn’t get around to it. At the Whirlpool Steelhead Triathlon, there was a Ruf Porsche 911 with a trunk mounted bike rack! It was sweet. I don’t remember what kind of bike was on it, but it wasn’t that special. I also saw 911 Cabriolet with a bike rack at Powerman Alabama earlier this year.

My buddy’s got a 911 with a custom roof rack. It looks pretty funny with his custom '04 Blade on top. The bike’s taller than the car. I’ll get a pic of it when he’s not looking.

Back in 2001-2002 I had a 1987 Pontiac 6000 and a 2001 Cervelo P2K. The bike never once sat on a bike rack or even in the trunk. It always got the back seat! Come 2002, car couldn’t make it to work so leased a new vehicle.

pre-2002 Bike-to-Car Value Ratio = ~2.5
current Bike-to-Car Value Ratio = ~0.2 (bike is now relegated to the trunk!)

So what’s everyone elses BCVR?

I’m driving an older model Dodge Caravan mini-van. Hope to squeeze a few more years out of it. I bought it secondhand just like my P2K and TCR.

My wife has the newer vehicle and she bought her two bikes new!

1976 Honda Civic CVCC Wagon! ~ $800 off of EBAY.

2003 Klein Q Carbon with Rolf Vigor Wheels & Rotor Cranks ~ $3,000

I’m at a 3.75:1 ratio for my car to bike cost. Who can beat me?

I’ve got a P2k so add a few hundred for extras and lets call it $2700 replacement cost for my bike w/o race wheels.

I’ve also got a 1994 Mazda 626 with 125,000 miles. I seriously doubt that I could get $2k for it.

I’ve been out of college for quite some time and am making plenty of money, I just don’t see the utility of buying a new car when this one is working just fine.

Um, yeah. A 1995 Subaru Impreza Wagon with over 100K on it…with a QR on top. Kinda sad, but not as bas as my friend who has a 1996 Honda Civic with a Litespeed Blade and a Rocky Mountain Element on top, or now maybe its a Santa Cruz huckster bike of some sort…that’s like double the worth of the car

I’m not a car guy for sure. I have 3 bikes and one old very uncool car ('93 Cadi). That’s fine with me because the back seat is big enough to carry my bike, no need for a rack.

I qualified 20 years ago when I had a '66 VW bus which I bought for $90 and a custom built road bike worth 2k. Even more so when I used to transport all our team’s bikes in the back of the bus. My wife wants me to put a roof rack on our Audi TT but I refused.

A good friend has a roof rack for his Audi TT. It looks sweet. But it’s only on during the weekends.

My bikes are carried around by a '97 Cherokee with 151K. Maybe worth $3K?

Calfee tetra tri, Sycip custom road, Sycip custom cross, Ibis Mtn, Santana mtn tandem. I think only the mtn bike could be replaced cheaper than the truck. And I like it that way. When it dies, I’ll replace with a Subaru (great car and they support our sports) and drive that until it dies.

It’s a good car. Cheap and durable. Now that it has some dents, I don’t give a shit- I just plow into shit. Well Tom, I had the same car (mine was red). I just sold it private party for $4250. It had 104K on it, so that makes a big difference. The Suby dealer was gonna give me $2500 for it when i bought my used WRX. And what was the deal with those useless hood scoops? I ran mine into trees, and damn near everything else, i’d drive it through creeks and huge mud fields on the way to climbing areas near Pittsburgh. I even made it though a bunch of mud pits that Ford Explorers and Jeep Cherokees couldn’t.

bike: 2004 P2K with AC 58 mm race wheels ~ $4800

car: 1986 Volvo 740 w/ 389 000 km ~ $1750 black book

my wife has been a great sport about it all, looking at getting something newer but keeping the Volvo as it still runs good.

Car - ‘93 Toyota 4-Runner w/ ~205K miles…still runnin’ great though. Couple minor scratches, cracked windshield, battery acid burn in the carpet in back, and it smells like my dogs. Figure on a good day I might get $1000 for it as a trade-in.

Bike - '02 Litespeed Ultimate - ~15K miles…couple of upgrades, meticulously maintained and still beautiful. Wouldn’t let it go for less than $1800.
