now yo yo cyclist lol i am joking as i belive sam is a fair cyclist and he has grown up a lot as well . apart from being the only dad in triathlon that has to provide for his family !

He is absolutely just being humble and respectful, and now someone that will do the talking with his legs, rather than with his mouth. Completely different race if he didnt have that swim issue. He takes his pulls on the front of the swim distancing the chase group even more, hammers the front of the bike where I think maybe one or two can stay, and takes 4 or 5 minutes on chasers and a bit more on the Norg train at the back.
All run legs are more toasted than we saw, so probably not the sub/low 2;30’s that happened. Some sub 2;35 just, and all chasing Sam on the front all run, likely a bit more motivated than he was sitting in a scrum of top runners…that is what he was thinking, but not willing to say…
I think the key thing here is whether or not MVR would have kept up with the turbocharged front group. I think he does, and I think its unlikely that Laidlow also outruns him.
Whether or not then MVR improves on his 6-10 min deficits or Laidlow is making up his 8-12 min deficits to the Norwegians is then a separate matter, but I don’t think Laidlow is winning this thing either way.
Note also that the Norwegians would approach the run differently if they’re 8 mins down from the front. They’d do it much more collaboratively and wouldn’t put in the surges they did once it was just the 3 of them. Its hard to improve on a 2:29, but Gustav and probably Blu run faster (all else equal) if they’re not trying to drop each other.
Laidlow making the front pack likely makes this much more of a close race, but I don’t see the placing from 1-5 changing. Maybe MVR sneaks onto the podium though
I never said I thought Sam could win the race, just that the dynamics change drastically for the next 8 guys in the chase. And I feel you dont factor in the leg dump all those chasing harder will have on the run. I dont think we get the groups we got, and in the run it would be every man for himself, with Blu and Iden just blasting to get to the front, instead of the group dynamic we got. In other words they would be running scared, not the more controlled pack running we saw.
And I think you are right in that MVR would have been the biggest befificary of this type of race. He wouldn’t have had his nose to the wind all day, worked off of Sam’s pace, likely would have gotten to T2 the same as he did in the actual race, and would have been running for the win after dispatching Sam in there somewhere. Kind of funny that how one guy does on the day can affect the outcomes in the top money places. Well at least how we speculate them to be… (-;
