If you’re a very good/excellent runner then this may not apply but if you’re 50 years old, big (6’1"/168 pounds), and trying to find the post T2 magic to get you to Kona I think they may be the ticket.
They definately get me more forward on my mid foot and I’ve been able to set new 1/2 marathon and 5k tri PRs as a result. I’ve had several very encouraging training runs where I’ve held sub 8 for 15+ miles with them. when I’ve switched back to my old shoes I now notice a more pronounced heel impact.
In my view, if you’ve lost the old light foot magic (I used to run 2:40s back in the day) then these dogs are worth a jog…
Dude, AMEN! Those hogs were way ahead of their time. They were just one great endorsement athlete away from going mainstream. You shouldn’t post it on this forum though because everyone will want them, leveling the playing field.
After 4 or 5 runs I am satsified with the shoes but nothing earth shattering. My body has had to adjust to the change in running position which is okay but I have noticed, that I have some discomfort (pain) in my hip the day after I run. It goes away and is not as bad as the time before. I am assuming that this is due, again, to the change in my stride.
Any thoughts from the rest of you who have tried the Newtons out?
I have the trainer and racer, no complains so far except the more than normal wear on racers outsole. It’s been 50 miles or not and looks worse than my 400 mile Asics.

Yeap, just as I predicted when these shoes were lauched. I’m thinking 250 miles before you have to trash them. Sort of reminds me of my experience with Mizuno’s which (for me anyway) breakdown very fast.
I remember Roos very well. Back around 1983 I was sponsored by them for a year. Of course they were sponsoring any runner that could break 30 minutes for a 10km so it wasn’t that big of a deal. They paid a friend of mine (Desmond O’Conner/Rod Steward look alike) $1000 per mile if he could lead the NYC marathon for a couple of miles. I think he ended running close to 7 miles at the front and then dropped out. Nice little payday. I think I still have my Team Roos singlet somewhere buried in a box.
Despite the pricks on this thread already and the likely direction it will go (Hello internet), I’m going to ask a serious question - how long expect a road racing shoe to last?
The last real racers I had were good for maybe 150 miles (Nike Zoom Spiridons). Rarely have shoes - trainers even - (Brooks, Nike, Saucony) really lasted more than 200 for me. I think I have close to 150 on my Newtons and I’m not sure that they are ready to to be trashed - the front of the lugs are kind of worn but that’s about it. I might post some pictures.
You’re friends with Desmond? That dude’s been running down here in N.O. for a long time, though he’d disappeared as late. The rumors are that he’s been seen back in town (impersonating Rod, of course) and recently got married.
Believe it or not but the Dynacoil technology was something first developed by NASA. My dad got a sample in the mail for a study he was conducting in the mid-80’s. Another running shoe from the past were Osaka’s, remember those with the funky outsole? My dad was a runner and had some cool shoes from back in the day. My absolute favorites were the Keds breakaways which were a very delicate racer from Keds, and yes made by the same Keds we all know and love.
back in the late 70’s, early 80’s, I was running track at Lamar University in Texas and Desmond was the distance coach at U of SW Louisiana. Back then a lot of us foreign distance guys (I’m Canadian) would hang together at races even though were from different schools. Desmond (Irish) was partly responsible for bringing a handful of Irish runners over to compete for USL, among them Ian Wilkerson who I was also good friends with. Ian also stayed on in the NO area after graduation and I think coached distance for a while at UNO. I moved to Mobile for 18 years (then here to Carlsbad, CA) and used to run with Desmond and Ian on the southeast road circuit. Always had a good time hanging with Des and Ian, they were a lot of fun, but trouble always seemed to follow them around

Dude, change your pad and take a Midol… These are all just opinions, no need for name calling…

No, actually, the posts earlier that you probably didn’t read or didn’t get about the Catapults and the Roos are folks having taking a piss and not being serious. Pretty much any post on Newtons and PCs or anything that seems new or faddish attracts this.
I think for some lightweight trainers or for some races, 200 miles is ok but a $150+ training shoe should get at least 400 miles IMO. I also got about 200 miles out of the Spiridons but they were a lightweight trainer. Mizuno’s have also yielded about 250-300 miles before I needed to replace them but my Saucony’s have been great. I have nearly 600 miles on my Tangents and the outsole and mid-section still looks fairly good.
