Newton Running Shoes, should I?

Read a lot of feedback all around the web, now thinking of buying a pair of Newtons trainers. Should I or shouldn’t I?? Anyone here use them successfully?

So Newtons are a good shoe to take a dump in, thanks Erik! A very versatile shoe.

Do you think they’re value for money? I’ve seen the website and am impressed.

no you shouldn’t

You registered today just to ask that? This guerilla marketing shit is starting to get really annoying…

The Newton’s seem to be a pretty hot topic around here. But I haven’t seen anyone talk about them from a perspective like mine, so I’ll jump in.

I am brand new to training (about 4 months now) and have REALLY struggled with the run. I’m a big guy (6’5’’ and 215lbs) with NO athletic background and the running was killing my legs. So I tried a lot of different stuff, including Newtons. The verdict on the shoes: I like them. But if I was giving advice to someone else starting from where I was, I would recommend the following:

  1. Start slow. Gradually build up from a run/walk pace.
2a. Learn how to run correctly (Chi Running, Evolution, POSE, whatever). Just learn how to run with the proper technique.
2b. Depending on how you learn best, it might be a good idea to find a coach who can help with the technique you choose. For others, book/dvd would be fine.
  2. Run with a metronome. This was a huge help for me.
  3. Get the right shoes. Newton’s seem to reinforce the proper technique, but they are pricey. I didn’t care so much about the money, so they were worth it to me because I felt like they helped me run the right way. But they were probably the least important component of my training. So, in my opinion, if you don’t care about the money, go for it. If money is an issue, definitely prioritize the other stuff but DO make sure you go get properly fitted at a running store and use the shoe that’s right for you.

Good luck.

I just did my first run in my Newtons…Very big difference from any other shoe I’ve EVER run in. The next day my Calf’s hated me!! I did a long tempo run for the first run in them and probably should have waited for a shorter one to break them in. Oh well…I’ve never had a shoe give me more cushion on down hills or just feel like no shoe is even there…I’ve had Mizuno’s and Asics and Pearl’s and the Newtons are by far the softest shoe of them all. I’m a bigger runner at 180lbs I go through shoes in about 250 miles or so. I can’t wait to see how long these things last…that will be the true test of there value to me…as far as function I believe that do what the claim on there website. My legs definitely feel the difference. It’s almost like running in Track spikes…but much softer. Again if they last then I would probably buy another pair. Seem to be made pretty well.

No, do not buy them. Not worth the money.

What if I put shoe cages on my Power Cranks and then rode my bike in Newtons? The power output would be unmatched in the history of time.
