Ok, I am about to spend the money and buy a pair or Newton Running shoes. These things have to be the ugliest shoes in the world but every online review I read say great things about the those.
Has anyone here tried the shoes, if so, what was the result?
I have owned them. I am not an elitest just a middle of the pack age grouper. 9-10 min miles running. anyway I had them a year or so ago. I put a lot of miles on them and they are a unique running experience, not better or worse, just different.
PROS, they are pretty light, the “technology” does make sense and IMO works. It was always a pleasure to run in them, compared to my current soucany lead weight training shoes.
CONS: ugly, mine were orange, my buddies white, second that “red bar of rubber” on the bottom (that newton bases their uniqueness on) sucked for me. I barely lift my feet while running and those red bars WILL trip you on something sooner or later. If you run like a pro this will not likely be an issue. But I am 5’9 and 210, so for me its about minimizing impact in my stride, so my feet stay close to the ground. and I had tripped several times in them. Lastly I thought the rest of the sole wore thru too quickly, especially near the toe for me. It was worn out before the red bar or the heal was even partially worn. sucked.
Good shoes, worth the money??? Depends. My wife bought me the latest greatest Zoot Race 2.0 (the silver ones) and I love them. LOVE THEM!!! They are race shoes only, but I will definately try their trainer versions for my next shoe. And they are cheaper than the newtons. I would recommend the Newtons, my money I would save 50-75 and get the zoots.
There are hundreds of threads on ST about Newtons and the forefoot running style. If you want to learn more about the shoes go to youtube and type in Newton Running. Everyone I know who has them swears by em. There are also some guys from Newton who will come on ST and answer any questions you might have.
Similar story here. I tried the Newtons, and don’t at all understand the hype. I’m now rockin’ Zoot Race 2.0’s and love them - great shoe. I gave the Newtons away to a friend - at least they’ll get used that way…
Greg,
Try them if you like. My father-in-law just about thrashed his achilles with them. Your results may vary. I tried them for a while but had similar achilles/calf problems. You may want to gather some info from “rroof” on this forum regarding Newtons.
Jamie
Funny you guys mentioned the calves. I had a lot of tightness, knots in my lower calves upper ach. when I was running in them. I attributed it to 2-3 nights a week of soccer, but maybe it was the newtons since you mentioned that. hmmm
I have done a lot of reading and after the injury laced season that I have had this year I would punch a hungry bear in the taint, while naked and covered in honey if I though it would help me run with less injury. I know, no shoe in the world will prevent all injuries and good mechanics is the best bet. In trying to move from a heel landing to a forefoot landing and this might just be a tool to help me out with that. I am also looking at the theory of using racing flats to help teach good running form / mechanics.
The problem is there is a theory for every runner.
Forefoot/heel strike was my reasoning for trying them too. Just didn’t seem to work for me and created more problems for me. They always have a kiosk at IMOO and probably @ IMKY. You can try them there and I think they give you either a discount or some schwag for buying them at the expo.
Bought them, since there’s nothing to lose with the 30-day money back guarantee, and returned them after 20 days because of they gave me an injury to my lower legs. I really wanted them to work, but in the end they didn’t work for me. There are people that love them because that’s their style of running. If this isn’t your style, this isn’t your shoe. Don’t let the salesperson talk you into “changing your running style”.
Don’t get fooled by the pace change. I noticed an instant gain in pace, but I noticed the exact same pace gain with any new shoe. After a few miles the pace came down to normal, as it always does. But the injury stayed, until I switched back to my old pair of shoes and within a couple days my injury was gone.
