Newton running shoes (1)

Can anyone tell me how they like the newton running shoes. I have a low to moderate arch with some overpronating problems and wondering if anyone else has my foot type and has had success with the newtons…THANKS!

They’re very good for running across the Sahara :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Sorry, I don’t own a pair but there have been LOTS of threads regarding them. I’m certain a quick search will give all the info you need!

Cheers,

Steve

If you find something pertaining just to the low-ish arch and over-pronation, please PM me. I’m interested in trying some, but I’m not sure I’m ready to make the leap until I know if I’m going to kill my IT bands from changing shoes.

There have been about a million posts on this subject, mostly consisting of people who have tried them and like them arguing with people who have not tried them and hate them. There are a few folks who tried them and didn’t like them, too, but we haven’t seen to many posts from them.

Remind me of a certain other product that causes so much friction here.

Let me answer your question in a very definitive way by asking you a question:

Newtons are not cheap. But since you are asking about them, I presume you are aware of the cost. So then the question becomes, ‘If the shoes DID give you success over what you are running in now, would they be worth the 155/175 (minus the value of the hat, socks, extra shoe laces, and bag)?’

If the answer to that question is yes, then order them and run the hell out of them for three weeks or so. If you do not find success, return them.

To answer your specific question, I too am low arch (military said ‘flat feet’) but neutral and I love the shoes and have been demonstrably faster in them. If you are a pronator they have a version of the shoe for you with more support.

i really like the experience of running in them. I feel fast, they make me want to run fast and if i believe the pace/heart rate readings from my garmin I do in fact run faster at the same heart rate than my other shoes.

BUT, after 4 or 5 miles the balls of my feet REALLY heat up and start to burn - apparently this is a symptom unique to me! I have tried switching insoles and they just give me a couple of extra miles before the heat starts - i still have blisters the size of 2 quarters on both feet :frowning:

I want to find a solution but so far no joy…my next step if I can’t find a solution will be to get them banned from races!

How do you find they have worn? As you mentioned they are expensive expecially if you run a lot and need to replace them ever 200-300 mile.

They may not be fitting you right if your foot is slipping around in them that much. Then again, you may experience the same if you ran in that position with your traditional shoes. I’m guessing they may be a little too big.

Have you tried using the socks that they sent you? Most of these problems can be resolved with proper socks.

I have put 153 miles on mine. There are no signs of wear other than the front of the red lugs are a little worn down.

Part of the appeal of these shoes is how light and flexibile these feel - though I am guessing that most people who put these on and are so blown away have never worn an actual racing flat - much less the effects of the lugs.

if anything they are too small than too large - i also have small blisters on the tops of my toes i haven’t experienced before and i think this is because they are 1/2 size too small. that said, going larger makes me think there would be even greater friction to cause blisters?

it might be that i land toward the outside of my foot and the friction being caused is from lateral movement rather than longitudinal movement. btw, I am using elastic laces too. Now I am wondering if they have anything to do with it? i’ll give regular laces a shot now and see…

I have a moderate to high arch but I do overpronate. I bought the support trainer Newtons at IMAZ, they were only 10.4oz vs 10.3oz for their racing flats. The shoes do control my overpronating and seem to make me faster, they definitely help to change your running style and increase your turnover. My previous shoes were Mizuno’s with Superfeet insoles and weighed 14oz so a significant weight diff. I’ve logged about 80 miles in them over 4 weeks and developed a pain deep in my rt ankle, which has since gone away after I switched back to my Mizuno’s. I will still use them as racing flats and for some training runs to help me stop heel striking so severely. I also found that even with my old shoes my turnover is much higher than it used to be.

I returned mine because the did not fit. I wear 13 and need a large toe box (not quite EE). They were just too tight and gave me a bit of pain .
They were light; however did not run in them long enough to comment on their benefits.
Will say they credited AmEx promptly so would say worth a try and use their return policy if necessary.

I DO NOT WEAR NEWTONS BUT I HAVE THIS PROBLEM TOO AND HAVE HAD IT FOR ABOUT 2 YEARS!!! I HAVEN’T FOUND ANYONE ELSE WITH THE SAME PROBLEM UNTIL I READ YOUR POST!!! I’m so glad you have the prob too!! I posted about it here several times. I have tried A LOT OF POTENTIAL SOLUTIONS!!! Nothing seems to work so far! I have tried every powder, balm, different socks, etc with only minor relief. Now I am trying new shoes and have an appt for a podiatrist in 2 weeks. It started when I a) switched running form and went way too far on my toes, got shin splints, then b) changed sneaker type to saucony grid omni moderates. shin splints went away but I developed hot spots on the ball of my feet. Been living with them since 1/05, but they have developed into terrible, thick, hard, yellow callouses and are now the primary limiter of running distance/frequency/speed. I also looked at my friends’ feet and see that no one has these awful callouses and blisters like I do. I had a friend in the running industry tell me that saucony’s are built on a wide last (I have a narrow foot) and I am thinking maybe I have too much lateral play in my shoes too. So I am in the process of trying new shoes (asics kayanos, ds trainers and nike frees for short stuff - they fit so nice and tight and I get NO friction).

Sorry to highjack this thread I just got excited that SOMEONE else has the same prob.

I land on the outside edge of my forefoot too. I have the same problem if the forefoot portion doesn’t fit nice and snug. I use elastic laces and pull things nice and snug around the forefoot (but not TOO tight) and stick to a brand of shoes that fits narrowly through that area. I also avoid slippy textured socks. Play with how snug you pull the elastic laces around the forefoot area and see if that helps.

I’ve never used Newtons.

out of curiosity - what brand shoes have you found that fit narrowly?

I wear Asics – men’s size 8. Flats for racing, DS trainers X for training. Non-athletic shoes I wear Womens 8.5 for reference.

I have high arches, so I have to make sure the elastic isn’t too tight over the arch, yet nice and tight at the base and at the very top. Usually takes a few runs to dial it all in each time I switch shoes.

any reason you wear mens’? The DS trainers I just got tout that they have “gender specific fit”. I like them so far…only 2 short runs in them.

I think I tried a womens size at some point and thought the mens fit better. Shoes are changing all the time so when I can’t get the DS Trainer X’s anymore, perhaps I’ll revisit. Maybe even try Brooks- our team gets a discount.

I posted my review here:
http://forum.slowtwitch.com/gforum.cgi?do=post_view_flat;post=1346069;page=1;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;mh=25;

My conclusion was that they were fine, but not appreciabley different than my $50 Nike Haywards, so count me in the group of having tried them and thinking they are fine, just really expensive racing flats.

I have been wearing DS trainers for about 4 years and never had the hot spots before. however, i really don’t like the latest version of them which was part of the reason for trying newtons. I just re-ordered 2 pairs of the previous (orange) version from footlocker.com for $69 each - gotta love fashion sneaker stores for selling off the older versions at a nice discount!

i still want the newton’s to work though so am going to try them with the forefoot laces a little tighter to see what happens…

IM a little worried these might give me problems with my knees in the long run, but then again, running does that in general…
