I’m coming off an injury so unable to put any real miles in but I have always been looking at the newton shoes. Well I got a pair for a great deal the distance S Ronald McDonald colors think there the 2013. I can only go for vey short runs at the moment so I have a question on the feel. I did a mile which is my limit right now. The left foot could feel the lugs but not much. Right foot pretty much felt like there was something in my shoe. The fit feels great. Lugs line up with the ball of my feet. Now is this something that breaks in? Or just something your foot gets used to?
Both…the lugs will start to wear down and their feel becomes diminished. As you grow accustomed to the landing spot they are trying to highlight you will also notice them less and less.
I have a pair of 2013 Newton Gravitys from a contest I won. When I first started running in them, I was very aware of the lugs. I’d say it took about 30 miles in them before I stopped noticing them.
at one point i had picked up a pair that had an issue inside the shoe (these were the mcdonald color ones you mention). i could feel a “bump” in the sole. apparently, there were a batch of shoes that had this issue. call newton, their service is great.
I have been running in Newtons since 2009ish and from time to time I can feel the lugs, especially on new shoes.
It took me a while (4-6 months) to transition to Newtons back in the day, the biggest issue with me was calf soreness, so start off with short distances and work up. Obviously with your injury this may not be a problem. Good luck getting back to running.
I found that using them as my “normal shoes” for a week or so really helped break them in a bit and made the lugs feel a little less prominent. Hope you have a job that is OK with warning beacons for shoes. -Tanner
I actually just bought a pair. Did your calfs hurt while running in them? Will this go away? I bought them the other day and don’t want to get to crazy with them, they feel great, but after about 15 minutes or so I can feel it in my calfs and I am afraid to push it further. Is this normal with those who are new to Newtons?
just take your time getting used to them. once you do, you’ll love them. i have tried other shoes and just feel faster in the newtons. i was wearing the red distance s that you are referring to and now wear the elites and LOVE them.
Were you using the distance as daily trainers or something for daily and these for a little faster shorter miles?
wore them for all running and all distances; anything from 5k to full marathon. i wore the distance s for about two years before i switched to the distance elite. i buy them 2 pair at a time and rotate between the 2 pair.
Do you have differently sized feet? Sounds like that since you seem to land with one foot on the edge of the lug. The lugs are really short (unfortunately) and don’t leave much room for foot to foot variance. Had the same issue. Needed to switch brands after all.
My feet are the same size. My right was the none injured foot so I might be landing a little harder on it now since I try to favor the left. I will give them a couple more miles to see the break in. No pain just not soft like I’m used to.
