Newbie Wheel Question: Shimano R-500 v. Easton Vista

So I haven’t pulled the trigger on race wheels yet. That is going to be my next purchase, but I have to save up first. Probably not going to happen until the middle or end of the summer.

My question is, which set of training wheels should I put on my tri bike in the meantime, Shimano R500 or Easton Vista? I have both now and just need to decide which set should go on the roadie and which should go on the tri.

Neither, save your money and get a nice set of 32 spoke 3 cross wheels that will be bomb proof and last for years and years.

Ah, flip a coin? Seriously, won’t matter with those 2 wheelsets. Color match the Eastons I suppose to the road bike?

That’s kind of what I figured. Easton’s don’t necessarily match the road bike . . . but the blue tires that are mounted on them do. I guess that is reason enough to leave them on the road bike if there isn’t going to be any noticeable performance difference.

Thanks

I’ve had good luck with Shimao WH-R550s with pull spokes, and I’m 180lbs. I beleive they are more durable than the 500s. Chucks Bikes is going out of business and has some FSAs for $135~$145 shipped, but I don’t know much about the wheel. I’ve been happy with his service. Performance Bike has Mavic Aksiums for $239 set.

I just went through this bc it was $80 to replace the rear free-wheel body on my WH-R550s (after a few years of hard riding) and I was thinking of buying new wheels instead. I had the WH-R550s rebuilt.

I don’t know about the Shimanos but my Easton Vistas have been excellent. They have treated me very nicely the past two seasons. I have been really pleased with how they are. I mean they are not top quality, but they are good enough.

I have both of those wheelsets and IMHO the Vistas win, no contest. The Shimano’s are very flexy - I get lots of frame rub when I try to run them on the Cervelo P2. The Easton’s are much sturdier feeling, and the bearings are super smooth. But, the only negative, they seem to be about 705c instead of 700c. Some tires can be very tough to mount on the Vistas.

No kidding. They came stock on my road bike which happened to be my first serious bike. I spend the summer thinking that fixing flats was about the hardest thing in the world. Pro Race 3 + Vistas = Sore Thumbs. Then I got the Shimano’s and realized that it doesn’t have to be that hard. But now fixing a flat on any other tire seem really easy.

I swear upon Easton wheelsets. I have had four, and all are equal or higher quality than comparably priced Mavic or Shimano. Agreed - I think the Vistas will be stiffer than the Shimano, but seriously, say f-that and get Open Pros. Going from those to race wheels is like going from a Honda Civic to a 911 Turbo.
