Newbie ? - Sprint Taper

As a first year racer I’m finding it difficult to figure out how much training to do the week of a sprint tri. I’ve done 6 tris this summer (Trisport in Southern Ontario), and so far the pattern has been to train at roughly 75% mon-tues-thurs, taking wed & fri off, race sat or sun. It seems to work relatively well, I guess.

Just wondering what others typically do for short races. Feel free to differentiate between big events and training-through events.

Would love to know if I do more or less than average - Thanks

For a “routine” sprint, I’d say do your normal Thursday, but cut it short. Rest up Friday – maybe an easy spin or some strides.

For a “big” race, it depends on your training volume in the few weeks before. If you ramped up your volume and intensity in preparation for the event, start tapering more like Monday, again by doing the normal routine, but cutting things short by a third or half. Easy Thursday; rest Friday. Rock on Saturday.

If you did not change your training for the “big” event, do the short taper.

I train normally up to three days before the event. On those days:

3 days before – normal volume but reduced intensity

2 days before – 75% volume and reduced intensity

1 day before – warm-up only.

That’s what works for me. YMMV.
