I bought an 04 Felt S25 this fall, it has been suggested that a 25 tooth cog would come in handy given the mountains here where I live. Would I have to worry about anything besides changing out the 23? Chain tension, anything else I didn’t think of?
Do you currently have two or three chainrings up front? what is your current teeth count, for front and rear? Are you 9peed or 10? And just for good measure shimano or campy?
You likely will have to change out all of the cogs, not just one (they come as a set). Other than that no problems. Just as a quick test after the change shift into the big / big 53/25 combo and make sure the rear derailleur still has some slack.
Typically at least the three biggest cogs are connected. You may be able to replace just those depending on sizes the other cogs are. Having said that, you may find the cost pretty close to just picking up a new cassette. If cost an issue, there are always some floating around on e-bay. With lots of folks moving to 10 speed, I have seen quite a few like new condition cassettes out there. Personally I would stick with no lower than Ultegra level but I think SRAM makes a 12-26 as well that may be good choice.
