New Zoot shoes

It’s about time someone built some shoes with these things in mind.

  1. Speed of Entry – The need to get in and out of T2 as quickly as possible
  2. Sockless Wear – Triathletes don’t want to take the time to put socks on
  3. WaterRetention – Studies have shown that traditional running shoes can gain an additional 30% of their weight during a race
  4. Biomechanics – Athletes run differently after racing a bike

I’m not sure how they will address #4 though. Too bad they won’t be available until next year.

March 2008?!?!?!

get 'em right after you get your Giro Advantage II helmet.

Oooh, they look neat too!

It SEEMS as thought thye have the right people designing the shoes, but running shoe customers are so particular that these would have to be better than sliced bread for someone to switch…The shoes look great and all, but the proof is in the performance.

Nike had two different tri-specific shoes very recently. Both called the Air Kukini.

I had a pair and they were nice for sprints, but what’s 30 seconds in T2 to get my regular shoes on for a long course race? I sort of think that a minimalistic shoe for a longer run is a dangrous concept. Loads of people race with flats though and don’t get hurt.

Good luck to Zoot, though. They are a good Tri brand.

We’ll be picking up the Ultra Race shoe to carry…also getting in a sample to try out, so we’ll let you know how it is.

“4. Biomechanics – Athletes run differently after racing a bike”

Really? I can’t wait to see the studies they’ve done to prove this…

Totally agree buddy. To me there are no loops on the heel cup and tongue for fast and easier transition.Has the issues of tired legs been addressed with differeing densities to compensate for over-pronation and especially the women’s version. To me the shoes lacks forefoot stabillity and cushioning and the upper looks like it will stretch, even with the thermo-plastic logo’s. But a great first attempt form zoot, this will suit the elite good but the masses may need a little more working in the shoe…Shawn, what you think fella, hope us two are not going to get too anal on this…lol

I guess you have never seen me run after 112 on the bike
.

Yes! These look FANTASTIC! Mid foot strikers rejoice!

I hate to speculate too much, but then again, this is slowtwitch. I would imgaine we will not see Luke Bell in these shoes. IIRC one of the main points of contention of his with Pearl Izumi was regarding them making him wear their shoes, and that they just couln’t make a good enough shoe for his standards. Zoot was good cause he could wear whatever shoes he wanted, since Zoot wasn’t in that part of the industry. A guy like Bell can’t affort to go through a couple of seasons to “work out the kinks”.

We shall see…

I’m pretty sure I had a pair of the Air Kuikini’s back in the early 90’s. Were they white
and Green? Mostly a lycra spandex upper?

The first ones (I think) were lycra-ish with a rubber webbing on top to tighten them down. The 2nd type had velcro.

“3. WaterRetention – Studies have shown that traditional running shoes can gain an additional 30% of their weight during a race”

YES! Especially in a 70.3 or an IM where you douse yourself with a wet sponge every mile.

I can see that guy’s foot collapsing over the side of the shoe… Too narrow for him? Too curved?

Mine were lycra with a black strap that had a quick connect type if thing to tighten. I usually never even connected it. I’ve been searching ebay and other places for some.

from the reflection of the yellow ones it looks like the entire zoot logo is reflective. if it is, nice touch for those of us who run at night. I never did understand why shoe companies didn’t make more reflective material on their training shoes.

Actually, I helped with the look and feedback on the shoes, in a few meetings at Zoot, and I’m nothing but impressed with them. I’m actually switching to Zoot completely, due to the quality of these shoes, leaving my current shoe company. Not because the company I’ve been with is bad, but rather the Zoot shoes do address my specific needs to perform well.

Contrary to the popular thought here of it being strictly a race flat for elites, Zoot will have 3 versions of the shoe, (race flat, neutral, and support), providing a shoe for each level of athlete, and their needs.

The fact there are no loops on the heel cup and tongue was addressed in our meetings, and it was determined they really weren’t needed. Most athletes don’t grab the shoe by the loops, they grab for stability at an area which is pronounced. Zoot did some testing, and found this to be very consistent. If you look at the tongue and high heel cup, you can see the height of those components addresses this. They allow a place to grab the shoe and slide your foot in.

The most impressive aspects for me have been the addressing of sockless wear. The interior is ENTIRELY seamless and has a special coating which reduces frictions. Athletes running from high speeds to slow speeds, can spend a long time in the shoes, without socks, WITHOUT WORRY OF BLISTERS! This also allows for the shoe to keep lighter weight, as socks tend to hold water, as do shoes. The shoes also have drainage holes in the bottom which allow for water to be released from it easily, and prevent added weight throughout the race. This has been wear tested, OVER AND OVER, and shows the quality of the shoe. I myself was skeptical at first, but again, I’ve been thoroughly impressed.

There are many other features to the shoes which I won’t get into right now, but when you see them and try them, you will be very impressed! Zoot is doing things right, and has just raised the bar.
