New Zealand Tri Scene

Hey all: I am looking for some personal feedback on what the tri scene is like in New Zealand and the nation in general. I am looking to do a master’s degree in either Auckland or Wellington. While school should be priority, I need not explain to you why Tri will be the most important factor in my decision. Cheers.

hey. i live here. i went to university in auckland and am moving to wellington in a month. what are you looking at studying here?

in terms of the tri scene…well nz is prob one of stronger nations in the world in triathlons.

i live in taupo currently.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on training locations, clubs and/or coaches, universities and programs (I am a poli sci major - looking at Masters of International Relations at Victoria in Wellington)… what’s the employment scene like there? Where to live in terms of training for triathlon (what parts of town are good and cycling friendly etc.) If you are open to it we can move these questions off the forum and converse by pm my email address is ostomyathlete@hotmail.com Thanks.

talk about it on here if you like. based on this forum it seems that many people would consider moving to nz so this info might be of use to them.

i studied a bit of politics at auckland uni. what area of politics are you looking at studying? international relations? i did a pretty cool stage 3 paper on ethnic conflict and international security at auckland uni.

employment scene? what kinda jobs would you be looking at? i don’t really know anything about wellington in terms of tri training. it is quite windy and hilly tho (world mountain running champs held there this year). i’m moving to wellington in a month and i think i will look at getting something closeish to the city. right now i live in taupo, which is prob one of the best, if not the best, places in nz for training.

Christchurch is by far the best choice. I’d pick Auckland second and Wellington last.

biased!

… either way, you’ll like NZ. You should be able to get in touch with some Wellington (and Auckland) runners via http://www.nzrun.com/messageboard/index.php … from there they can point you in the direction of some swimming and biking peeps in the tri scene

Edit: added city names…

biased!

Guilty!

ChCh is dry and windy.
As opposed to wet and windy everywhere else.
Could use some hills less than 7% grade though…

Wellington has some of the best offroad running of anywhere I have ever lived. Unlimited single track, not crowded, hills everywhere. If you want flat off road, you will not find a lot though.

Cycling is so-so. The terrain is great, but the rest is not. As anywhere in NZ you will be dealing with rough roads and aggro drivers who want to drive to fast on narrow roads. Then there is the wind, but you will get used to that… maybe. There is always over the hill in the Wairarapa for long rides - pretty excellent training over there.

I do love this place…

There is a pretty good tri-community here as well, for all distances.

cleetus u in welly? i start a new job there jan 9. whats the deal with swim squads? i was thinking of maybe trying to swim with capital swim club in am as a guy i used to swim with way back is swimming down there.

YaYa, I back in Welly after being away for awhile. I am currently swimming on my own until after christmas. I on the hunt for a squad myself - but am told the squad options have become a bit thin. Some good groups at kilbirnie for faster swimmers is what I know so far. Will let you know more when I know!

heh dude i know in welly just swam a 57 in 100 fly at nats. and to think i used to beat him. oh and a low 24 for 50 free.

hmm if my bro was still swimming he’d be around 5th in 50 breast!

I agree running in Wellington is great.

There are some good rides available, depends on what you are after. Good variety of hills and flats, and quiet roads for are available if you know where to look.

There is a reasonably good swim group at Porirua if anyone is interested (once a week at the moment, but would build if there were motivated swimmers). There are various masters/tri groups around the pools so you shouldn’t have too much trouble linking into something.

where would be a good place to live for running, swimming, biking as well as being close to my work? i will be working on the terrace.

anywhere in town is great. It is hard to be far from a trailhead. The pool can be a bit farther depending on which one you wanna swim at. If you stay western it is easier to get to the better rides quicker - don’t think I can ever get sick of riding 'round Makara - and you will be close to the Terrace, thorndon and fryeberg pools (but not Kilbirnie). I am in Kelburn and it has pretty good access to everything I need (but I work in the Hutt)

so is there a pretty good selection of swim squads? i wouldnt actually mind swimming with a ‘proper’ swim club, altho having said that id prob miss out on meeting hot single tri chicks (are there any in wellington?)…but yeah. swim city aquatics and capital are 2 clubs which spring to mind and which are both doing ok at nats.

There are a few around, but options are limited if you want a faster group, which it seems like you need!

Hey there

I live in Auckland and the tri scene is average here. While there are lots of squads and tons of options for running or biking you will be training in and around traffic. It does get quieter on weekend mornings, but Welli or Chch are better for safe biking, no doubt. There are at least a dozen tri/masters swim options.

If you were female I could tell you that there are a ton of races for you to do…as it is, there isn’t a whole lot of race action, for the population base and the triathlon names here (Clark/Docherty/Baker). Opinions may differ on this.

I did graduate work at Auckland Uni in Pols. They have been trumpeting lately that they are the only world class uni in NZ, based on those league table things being collated now. That may or may not influence your decision.

cheers

i hope to go around 48-49 for swim in im nz. so wouild many groups not cater for me? i really need other fast swimmers to push me, otherwise i get complacent and lazy
