The Individual Time Trial race, U.S.A. Cycling sanction pending, will be held on Sunday May 19, 2013 at 8am in New Paltz, on the same bike course as the American Zofingen race and comes in two flavors, 56 mile or 112 mile.
Everyone in the NE who wants to raise their cycling to another level should consider this. Having it on the calendar will motivate you to hit the trainer during the winter and the roads for long rides in early spring.
You will still suffer but you’ll also be able to laugh at the AmZofer’s (like me) who are suffering more. As JM says: “It puts plenty of hay in the barn for the rest of the season.”
I did it in 2010 as prep for The Harpoon Brewery to Brewery 148 miler. The B to B was easy compared to the AmZof ITT!
This looks great in terms of stepping up my riding game (which needs much improvement) As a fairly new cyclist/triathlete (slow avg speeds ~19mph), would this be something I should skip (for fear of complete embarrassment and heckling)?
Hell no! I’m likely slower but it paid huge dividends.
I imagine if it gets sanctioned the field may grow but as it stands it’s very low key. Like less than 100 participants (estimate). So, You’ll spend a lot of time alone. Imo it’s more of a training day than a race per se. Still, you’re racing the clock so you can make the most of it if you’re so inclined. And the price is (was?) right.
Oh and there is NO heckling. This is one event that “just finishing” is an accomplishment. Trust me.
here is the Long Course bike profile (3 loops). The ITT and the Du start in different places, so yours may be shifted slightly one way or the other, but they stay on the same roads. For my 3 loops last year, my Garmin had me at ~8900ft for 83mi.
While the climbs are long, steep, and scary to some, it is the Mohonk Hill House (name?) descent that is the most frightening for me. There is a post somewhere in the archives that turned into a pissing contest to see who went the fastest on that descent, most topped 50mph.
It is the only big race event in my life that I DNFd in two consecutive years. I have an ax to grind on this course so 2013 will be the year that I will get rid of that damn monkey. They can paint “Ouch” as much as they want in all those F*%^&#ng hills and I will just sneer and laugh at those words. I do pray, however, that my front wheel won’t pop again as it did this year going downhill at 44 mph. That was scary…
Oh… I won’t be running the Brooklyn Half Marathon again the day before the ITT. I thought that doing that would have made it a tough but cool weekend brick. Boy that was stupid…
I did the du this year so I can’t speak for the roads from the start of the ITTs but I felt the roads were in good shape. The descent from Mohonk House mentioned above was scary as shit. Oh and cars are allowed on that road and all roads. Though traffic was fairly light if I remember correctly. The one bad road surface was the right turn out of the crazy descent if I remember correctly.
I missed the AZ sign up so maybe I will signup for this one.
A lot of the course was repaved not too long ago.
There are only 8 corners in the 28 mile loop, all right handers.
The stretch along 299 has no shoulder and the traffic is high speed, however, we post a police officer at the corner of Butterville & 299 which alerts and slows the drivers.
I just registered for the full Iron ITT lord help me… I’m going in with the belief that not beating up my legs on that ridiculous Du run course will give me enough zip to make it up to Mohonk Mtn. house a few times. I can’t guarantee that I won’t venture off course to pick up a burger at the pavilion along the way, however. Now just hoping that the weather won’t be a repeat of 2011 and I’ll be able to take in the view at the top of Minnewaska.
