I will be working near NYC on short notice and am considering doing the NYC Tri on 6-27. What is the scoop? It was a Du last year? Is Hudson safe/clean to swim in? 6Am start, what about parking? Hammering through Manhattan early Am seems pretty cool. Apparently closed course. Not much specific info on race web site. Any and all input appreciated.
It was a duathlon last year because of a rainy week, washing a lot of crap into the Hudson, making it even less safe than normal to swim in. Otherwise, I’m told the Hudson isn’t too bad to swim in, pollution-wise. It’s been cleaned up quite a bit over the last decade or so.
The Hudson is fine to swim in, having done it. If New York gets the Olympics they world’s finest will be swimming in it, which to me is an indication that you can do it too.
As for the race, it is certainly not a hard Oly. Pretty straight forward and reasonably fast. Riding along a closed highway is pretty cool, if not very scenic. The ride is slightly downhill on the out, with a steep hill/turn around in queens and then the same route back. Watch the bumps going over the toll booths – prime bottle launching/flatting area. Run starts with a moderate hill before going into the park for three 1.75 mile loops. Mostly rolling, nothing major. Great spectator run course.
What else, you have to walk from the transition area to the swim start and you end the race in CP a good ways from the transition area. These are the only real bummers of this race.
That’s all I can think of.
Thanks for the response. Any advice on getting to and from race? I will not be staying in host hotel and will drive in early Sunday AM. Is there designated parking? I know bike has to be racked on Saturday but I am trying to not have to figure all this out after spending $150 entry fee. Do you have to walk a mile from T1 to swim start? Is there a way to get shoes/stuff back to T1? With 6AM start it sounds like you would want to get there by 4:30, yow that’s early!! I am mildy concerned about race director, no response to e mail to them with similar questions. Any idea of their track record? Thanks for your time.
I’ve done it the past 2 yrs but skipping this year b/c of knee surgery.
You HAVE to rack the bike on sat, only the eletes can rack on sunday am. You do walk the 1mi from T1 to the swim start but it isn’t that bad. In the past they had a bag collection at the swim start and delivered them to the finish in CP. Parking shouldn’t be that big of a problme in the AM.
