YIKES! I was looking at races for next year and saw that NYC had some information on pricing out. According to this (where they sell slots to clubs to resell to those who don’t get in through the lottery) the price for entry to the race is $265. Gulp. But then out of curiosity I looked at Charity Partnership Application it says they sell the slots to charities for $700! Holy moly! Talk about price gouging.
I’ve done some fundraising in the past to get into sold out races and usually the ‘registration’ fee to start the fundraising is about the same as the race entry fee. In one case it was about 1/3 the price and so I figured that was the cost to the charity. Never did I imagine that the races were charging the charities more than the standard entry fee.
I’m one of the few (it seems) that don’t have a problem with rising race fees. I understand economics and know that race directing is a business and they’ll charge what the market will bear. And that they are out to make a living. And that some things are just too expensive for some people. But I’m just shocked at the price NYC tri is charging charities.
