New York City-IM training

It looks like I may have the opportunity to move to NYC in the next couple of weeks. I’m excited about the opportunity but at the same time am having some hesitations because I’m doing IMLP and don’t want my training to suffer. Currently I live in DC and it’s really easy to find great training. In NY, where would I do my long rides? How would I get to anywhere to do a long ride if I don’t have a car? Anyone with any information to ease this transition please share!

Living in NYC and also training for Placid, here are my thoughts: long rides require going across the Hudson River on the George Washington Bridge, which has a separate bike lane. It’s really easy to get across. There is a bunch of riding over in New Jersey and in the lower Hudson River valley. Some decent climbing and a good number of rollers as well. Here’s one of the better sites I have found with cue sheets and other stuff: http://www.roberts-1.com/bikehudson/

While there might be other places that are better for IM training, I have no complaints about doing so in NYC.

NYC is great for triathlon training. There are awesome long rides in Northern NJ. You can ride your bike over the GW bridge (depending on where you live in the city it can take as little as 10 minutes to ride to the bridge) and then ride the Palisades in NJ. There is a dedicated bike line and you will find thousands of cyclists training there every day. Great course filled with hills. You could also ride in Long Islands. You can also ride loops in Central Park (do it early so as to avoid tourists and lolly-gaggers). I actually find biking in the greater NYC one of the best parts of the city. I would not worry about finding good rides in the area. The tougher option is finding an afforable pool to swim in.

That is great to hear. It’s my one anxiety about the potential relocation but it sound that it shouldn’t be a problem. Thanks!

How would I get to anywhere to do a long ride if I don’t have a car?

This makes me laugh. Its a long ride, not a drive-ride brick. I didn’t start riding until after I moved to the city and so I’ve always ridden to and on a ride, never driven. This sounds a little prickish, not meant to be. Its just funny to me since we have such great access to beautiful rides without needing a car to get there but you wouldn’t think it before you’ve been here. For rides, also check out the extensive library at www.nycc.org

As for the pool, Riverbank State park, $20/month, 50m pool.
