New triathlon--on a Speedway!

You fast bikers should really be able to show your stuff on the Kansas Speedway, which is a 1.5 mile NASCAR/IRL track in Kansas City. It might be a little warm in Kansas in August, though.

Hey, this is nothing new. They’ve been holding the Esprit Ironman, Half Ironman and Olympic distance tri on the Formula 1 Circuit Gilles Villeneuve track in Montreal now for 14 years. I know many who can handle mega monotony and set their Ironman PB’s on this course (bike is 42 laps or so of the 4.2K course). I set my 1:59 Olympic tri PB on this course. There is a 180 degree turn on this track, but if you come in wide, cut the apex tight and exit wide, you can still hold ~30 kph through the turn, so it does not slow you down that much

Humpy Wheeler, owner(?) of Lowes Motor Speedway (formerly Charlotte Motor Speedway), is a cyclist and hosts a time trial series on the track through the spring and summer.

Happy trails,

A couple of times, while watching Speed Channel, I’ve thought to myself, “I’d like to take that turn on my bike!!!” Like when you come down the hill at MidAmerica (I think it is) and there’s that right hander at the bottom, that would be fun. Or to click off a couple laps, running past those big grandstands, could be enjoyable.
