New Trek Speed Concept

The mid tower toppers max reach on a large is 463mm (back of pad). So it depends on what your pad x measurement is to (mid pad or back of pad)? I’m usually a proponent of giving yourself additional reach capability in case you ever need it. I would personally do the far tower toppers.

My final ‘issue’ is that I’m a lifelong Quarq fanboy, have 3 now and love the support and ‘just work’ nature of them. That said I am also a shimano groupset-a-holic - had SRAM on my Specialised Epic MTB and whilst noting this isn’t fair reflection, would like to go Shimano on the new bike, but clearly won’t be going Shimano for power meter. So that then means swapping to a AXS/Quarq powermeter with the rest of the setup shimano, or going Vector pedals which probably makes more sense.
All bikes in our household have used Quarqs as well. But SRAM eliminated their shortest 162.5mm crankarm option. So, for my wife’s SC I went with a Rotor Aldhu + P2M NG + Shimano chainrings. If the Quarq crankarm lengths work for you, then the Quarq DFour with Shimano chainrings should work great.

Edit to add one more question. Noting I’m currently limited to 23mm max on the Argon which isn’t fun on rough chipseal, is the clearance really only 25mm on the front, or is that dependent on the rim width? Ie if I were to get a wider rim would a 28 fit? NZ loves rough chipseal, so it’s a consideration.
Once we had the SC in hand, I assumed the 25mm front tire spec was about best aero fork spacing rather than physical clearance, because there is plenty of space. My wife has 25mm internal width rim wheels with 28mm tires for training. Her race wheels have 23mm internal width. Initially we ran a 25mm Schwalbe Pro One TT up front. But it proved kind of fragile. With the release of the Conti GP5000 TT in 28mm we made the switch. Plenty of clearance. Without Trek reps, such as Carl or Mitch online anymore, I’m not sure where we’d get an answer on the 25mm front tire spec. I asked our Trek dealer, who claims to be the top SC seller in the US, and the owner did not know. I’ll prompt him to see if he can get anything from Trek on the subject.

My x measurement was to the centre of my Argon pad. So back of pad was 487-40=447 to back of pad. Apologies, forgot after I’d taken and noted the measurements that the Trek chart used back of pad. The Y is to the top of the ceegees pad which is fairly thick so there’s a chance I may drop a few mm.

This is the first time (as per initial post) where I’ve bought using this type of fit setup so was just wanting confirmation of my reading.

Which I think puts me back in the space of the right bits coming as standard.

And thanks for the info on the tyre widths. Reassuring as that’s one of the restrictions on the Argon - can’t run wide wheels or big tyres as the front especially is incredibly narrow.

Be prepared to replaces the stock pads. They are horrible.

My personal preference is the low rise base bar. Anything but the low rise base bar is hideous looking. But if that doesn’t bother you, go for it.

The ceegees completely changed the Argon, so strong chance I’ll start with them as a day 1 upgrade.

And regarding the aesthetics, I’m a 6ft4 49 year old that spent 35 years in norther England without sight of the sun now parading my shaved legs in a lycra onesie. The base bars are not the thing likely to offend the eyes of passerbys.

Thanks for that. I wasn’t sure if the dFour with shimano cranks /rings was still viable on 12 speed. I live and train in a fairly hilly area, and plan some hilly races so I’m not quite ready to commit to 1X yet.

And one other thing I saw back in the start that the ceramic BB was referred to being $80 no brainer. On the Trek NZ site for Project one that’s showing as +$700 which is about USD $400. I’m guessing that was an initial ‘offer’ that’s long gone? Which moves me back to not really seeing the value in ceramic BB.

And I hadn’t realised that Mitch wasn’t still posting. That’s a shame, seemed really helpful and was one of the things that gave me a bit of confidence in the SC as I could see support was available if there were any issues.

I’ll second Steve on the arm pads. They are garbage. My wife is always a bit harder on them than most. But I’d say the cover material was bunched up on hers in just a few hundred miles. To add insult I have not seen trek offer these separate from the the holders so they want $50US for the replacement kit!

We checked the CeeGees and they were ok. It’s just that the combo of the, on the stock holders doesn’t lock your arms much at all.

She went with the 51speedshop short height cups and they’ve worked out great.

I believe the current Quarq DFour DUB is what was called the DFour91. It is made for the latest Shimano chainrings. Just pick up the 12 speed versions and you’ll have what you need. I’ve heard the 11 speed rings work fine with Shimano 12 speed anyway.

Wife’s SC was Shimano build build because small frames were not available. For the rotor aldhu carbon we had to swap the 24mm Shimano Praxis’s BB for a 30mm T47 BB. You will need a DUB T47 BB. I’ve never thought that ceramic was a benefit for BB rotational speeds.

The quarq dfour can’t use a 12 speed chain ring as the bolt pattern doesn’t match. But you can use an 11 speed shimano chain ring with your 12 speed shimano group set.

Are you sure you aren’t citing a cosmetic match concern? Shimano has never changed their current chainring bolt pattern AFAIK. I mounted the 12 speed Shimano rings to the P2M and it didn’t have a new bolt pattern from the non-DUB Quarqs we have. Cosmetically, it wasn’t a perfect match. But with both the 9200 rings and the spider being black it isn’t that noticeable. I believe the Quarq is still using a format that matches the 9100 era component rings.

Edit: There was a long discussion on weightweenies about this and it doesn’t appear to be possible. Bolt pattern may not be the correct term. It seems it’s more due to the shape of 9100 vs 9200.

Edit 2: it does appear it will work based on this: https://weightweenies.starbike.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=170566&start=90

This shop keeps pretty up to date:

Yeah I just saw this as well. Good to know. Glad it works. Wish sram would update the dfour. Or shimano could just make an accurate pm.

Does she also have the BTA hydration system from Trek? Can you still get the 51-speedshop pads pretty close together with the hydration on? Or is there interference?

Yes. That is the reason we’ve stuck with the stock extension system. She came from a narrower pad setup using a Zipp Vuka Stealth and vertical Torhans hydro system. But Torhans mount failures ruined a couple of races for her and the Trek bottle is solid in comparison.

I think where she’s set with the 51SS pads is almost as narrow as we can get them. They could go slightly narrower if I drilled and tapped a set of holes midway between the stock ones. But right now her arms are already pretty tight to the bottle. The 51SS pad holder shape slightly interfered with the bottle at their front corners so I removed some of the holder corners using a belt sander. They provide a lot more support than the stock holders/pads and won’t deteriorate like the stock pad material.

Hi all, I’m looking at a used speed concept size M on a good deal and was wondering if i can get any help here for fit.

I have been fitted to a speedmax cf slx 2018 size S with the following:
Pad reach: 403mm
Pad Stack: 618mm (can go up 20mm more but limited by adjustability of the current bike)

The used speed concept had a mid tower rise, based on the charts for px and py from this https://retailerassetsprd.blob.core.windows.net/...ZzABYHTFInUlT%2Fo%3D the fit seems fine but i would like to confirm if im right.

Thank you, appreciate any advice i can get!

Cheers
Brendan

Hi all, I’m looking at a used speed concept size M on a good deal and was wondering if i can get any help here for fit.

I recently bought a new SpeedConcept SLR 9 AXS for half price during an inventory clearance sale at my local Trek store. Depending on the cost of the used bike, couldn’t hurt to call around to see if you can find a new one heavily discounted.

Great deal!

Is that the new disc version? Would they ship to uk ?

It is the new disc version - a 2023 model. It was only on existing inventory. They had 3 bikes, all of which have sold.

If there are Trek company owned stores around the UK, it’s worth calling around. At half price, my bike was only $7,100 - so that leaves a lot of money for a quick trip to the US if needed!

Good luck with your hunt.

Wow, that is pretty impressive. Too bad the half price wasn’t on the ultegra version for $5k!

Good grab!
