Any background in the three sports? Any athletic background at all? Recent athletic/fitness pursuits? Goals? You’ll get much better answers if you give a few details

“Triathlete’s Training Bible” by Joe Friel is your best bet.

if you havn’t been swimming, cycling, and running on a regular basis, I would recommend starting up as soon as possible. DO NOT go out right now and go long and fast, just do the three sports in small distances. Get comfortable in the pool, in the saddle, and running at a steady pace. You need to provide more information about yourself and your background to get more detailed advice.

Tons of specific information, training logs, and “couch to Sprint” and other training programs at www.beginnertriathlete.com

Good Luck…

Welcome. Have fun and you will be just fine.

. . . .Get comfortable in the pool. . .

Opps, that is what I have been missing.

I hate the pool.

Good idea to get comfortable with all three disciplines then focus on areas where you feel you need improvement after your first race. Be sure to get in some open water swims because there is a world of difference in open vs. pool.

Why first event in 2009? If you start training now there is no reason why you can’t do a sprint or two this summer, maybe even an olympic distance in the late summer/early fall? I guess it depends on where you live too - I’m in the SF Bay Area so there are many events to choose from in the spring, summer, and fall.

The Triathletes Training Bible is a good book but it might be a bit intense for someone just getting into the sport. Just my two cents.

This might be the single biggest reason that I’m a Triathlete today and not just a guy who did a Triathlon once. A great guide and fun to read too.
