New Tire For HED3?

You need a new tire for your HED3 clincher. It’s your front wheel. Assume that you cannot track down a Bonty Race X Lite TT 19mm tire. Also assume that you are perfectly comfortable riding a 19mm tire up front. You would choose:

Brand:
Model:
Width:

Also assume that you are perfectly comfortable riding a 19mm tire up front.
A new wheel.

Seriously, it was MADE for a 19mm. You can run something else of course, but wouldn’t you just be better off selling it in classifieds and buying a jet6 or 404?

Brand: Conti
Model: Supersonic
Width:20mm
.

vittoria
open corsa evo cx clincher
700 x 20
.

Call me crazy, but I’ll probably go with:

Brand: Continental
Model: GP4000S
Width: 23

When it comes time to replace my tires. After talking to Hed, they made me feel better about running a 23mm on there. While they did say that it won’t be as aero at very low yaw angles, they said that past ~5 degrees or so it would be a wash. With that and the added benefit of lower rolling resistance, better puncture resistance, ride quality, and tire options in a 23mm tire, it seems like a fair trade for me.

I don’t know. HED has said that a 23mm tire is a good choice. Would a HED3 with a 23mm (or a 22, 21, or 20 mm) tire be a better choice than a Jet6 or a 404? Again, I don’t know. Would the better crr of a 23mm tire outweigh the increased drag (I assume the drag would increase) associated with running wider than a 19mm tire on the HED3? Again, I don’t know.

I’m worrying about a very insignificant detail in the grand scheme of things, but with a swim as crappy as mine, I need all the time I can buy on the bike

the answer depends on the average yaw angle

if the average yaw angle is very low, or very high, the h3 would be better than a 404

How do you figure out average yaw angle? Is there a rule of thumb to follow, for example, if you average x mph during a HIM the average yaw angle will be higher (or lower) than if you were to average y mph during the same HIM?

you would need to know the average wind speed and direction at the time you are on course, AT ground level, not weather station level, you need to know the path the course follows and compute the yaw angle distribution over time based on your expected speed at each point on course.

in other words its kind of hopeless.

if you tend to race in totally windless places though, its easy. average yaw angle will be low =)

zipp and hed tuned their wheels to excel in the 8-15 or so yaw range, they seem to believe that is the meat where most people are going to be.

^ this.

It’s somewhat of a guessing game, which is why I suggested going with one of the others. If a 20-23mm tire is what you are wanting to run, I think a C2 rim (or Firecrest of course) 60 depth wheel would be a bit more “sure thing” than the H3. Realistically (in my experience anyways, but I generally race under 150#) you could go even deeper in the front (which should be faster) while at the same time removing a bit of the trispoke “push”.

If you want to stick with the trispoke though and a 19mm is out of the question (why, out of curiosity?) then most of the other suggestions have been about as good as you could get. I like my SuSo, but I admit it does feel awful flimsy (even compared to a Vittoria Evo)

It’s not that a 19mm is out of the question, it’s that a 19mm Bonty Race X Lite TT appears to be out of the question (because Trek doesn’t make them anymore, and I haven’t been able to find any hanging around in Trek shops). I have zero handling issues with the HED3, under any conditions. So, I’m not looking to replace my HED3, and I’m not looking to move away from a 19mm tire (which is what I’ve used for the past 2 years). What I am asking is if I can’t get a 19mm Bonty aerowing TT, then what?

I am running Conti GP4000 700X20 f/r on my trispokes.

you could also look at the michilen pro race 3 700x20.

I ride that and have been happy with it. I have yet to see how the crr of the 700x20 tires though all the results I have seen have been for the 23 width.

Best,
GS

I still have a few Bontrager Aerwing tt 19’s laying around but after they are gone I think I would ge with a Veloflex 20mm Record.

Want to sell me one of those aerowings?

I have Bonty 19mm aerowing tyres and Veloflex records in 20mm and I know which I’d rather run and which ones I seem to do better on. The Bonty tyres might be more robust but when I need speed its a no-brainer for me and the Records go on my H3s. But to be honest I’ve run my H3s with 19, 20, 22 and 23 mm tyres on them and I can’t tell any real difference when switching from one to another (so long as the tyre is the same type and make - e.g. Pro3Race in 23 and 20, or Bonty in 19 or 23). Maybe they can be separated in the wind tunnel, but I can’t. My view is what you gain in one area you lose in another (RR v aero) - and vice versa.

On the matter of a new wheel - I see that Michael Hutchinson (the best home-based TT rider here in the UK) has switched to the H3 this year and is still going as fast (if not faster) than before. It is also the choice of Bradley Wiggins. I’d be in no hurry to follow the fashion for wide rims and tyres.

I posted a WTB in the classifieds here, and had two of them in the mail to me the next day. They can be found if you look.

Faulty assumption I guess . . . . Let’s see if I’m as lucky

It was, in fact, a faulty assumption. A ST forum favorite sold me one. The tire arrived in the mail today. I will never again underestimate the power of the ST classifieds.
