Shiv gets a new look for 2012
The Shiv time trial bike is UCI-legal now that it’s lost its nose cone, and a matt black frameset with white Specialized logos gives it a new look this year. Available in the UK as a module only – frame, fork, stem, bar, brakes, cranks and chainring – for £5,000, a limited number will be for sale almost immediately. The updated Shiv time trial bike is UCI and triathlon legal for 2012
Makes sense. Many of us have thought for a while something is looming.
My guess is it’s taking Shiv aerodynamics & making it more approachable for the tri market, ie those that don’t care at all about UCI.
We know that the nosecone Shiv is faster than the UCI Shiv, but for 2012 pre-launch they are only showing UCI Shiv.
Therefore, that leaves room to speculate that the Shiv is the time trial offering & the triathlon offering is about to be updated.
I personally anticipate something looking like the nosecone Shiv, with tri-friendly geometry & adjustability, and room for built-in trinkets like the Speed Concept.
With super adjustable top-shelf bikes from Trek & BMC being out there, aimed at the tri market, Specialized had a gap to fill, and it looks like Kona will be the official release.
Word is they are coming out with a nose cone version the 2012 model…we’ll see! I hope not because I just bought a 2012 and would hate to have to replace after only a month.
There is a bike coming, clearly. I’ve said that for 4 months now and grabbing the attention at Kona has been the plan for a long time.
The problem with the Shiv is that while it’s a great bike and aero as hell, it’s a PITA to build (32 page build manual) and maintain. Plus many an athlete simply did not fit on the bike. I expect the new bike to be much more applicable to the masses.
It does sound like there is a new bike coming out, Jordan made a comment about it in his IMC thread. Also, Specialized has removed the Transition Pro (frame set and complete) from their website.
I know you just got your Shiv, but is there any desire from Specialized or yourself for you to be on a 2012 bike?
I was also wondering this when I saw Rasmus riding an “older” model at his last race.
Does Specialized care as much in Tri as say having the HTC team on 2012 bikes? There has to be a marketing benefit to them to have their best athletes on the latest equipment regardless if the older model is “better” or “faster”
There would be, I think, next year. I.e., the nosecone Shiv is current NOW. But I would think they might ask us to ride the no nosecone bike next year. I am not sure. Of course, given that the nosecone is faster, there might be some OTHER 2012 bikes that you haven’t seen. Yet… And that is ALL I will say…
after seeing what felt did with their DA i am wouldn’t be surprised if that is why the transition pro is no longer there and a 3-4k shiv type model will take over.
I am not supposed to say anything but if you guys can keep it under wraps just here on ST… here is the scoop.
Specialized is redoing it’s flagship transition and I putting a newer more adjustable shiv for the tri market. it will have the nose cone , tri specific geometry an a more adjustable stem , seat and post. Wait till you see what they do with the fork :0)
Even better :0)
Do you remember the mind gear shifting bike? Well the engineers at specialized have intergrated it into the new bike so no shifters at all you just need the new Ehelmet ($2500+) with mind bending electrodes in it. Charge is good for 10,000 shifts. Supposedly makes it 20seconds faster per 40km.p
