New shoe + pedal recommendation

Hello,

I am going to buy a new set of pedals and shoes today for my new tri bike. I currently use the Shimano SPD SL Ultegra pedals and the 151 shimano shoes on my road bike. I am considering going to the speedplay type pedals and the shimano TR02 shoes.

Any thoughts and recommendations? Am I giving something up by not getting a “platform” type pedal. I thought I would look at the speedplay’s, as they are probably easier to get in and out of. I could also look at the egg beaters (I use those on my mtb).

Thanks in advance

The SLs are great pedals, so if they’re not causing a problem why change (if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it). Speedplays are a love 'em/hate 'em kind of thing and the cleats are so heavy that they negate the weight savings of the pedal. It’s also nice to be able to train on your tri bike with the same shoes you ride on your road machine, so unless you’re scrapping the SLs on your road setup, I’d put them on the tri bike.

I have the Shimano TR-01s and they suck (fit is bad and the seam on the strap is placed so that I can have them too loose or too tight but never right. I’ve heard that this was solved with the 02s.

Contrastingly, I ride the Shimano TR01 shoes and LOVE 'EM! I bought a pair of TR02 but have yet to try them on the rode… I was exclusively a Carnac man but gald I tried the TR’s. The TR02 seems a bit wider in the forefoot which, for me(size 48) is a PLUS! Not crazy about the all silver color, but, oh well…

I also switched from the new DA pedal(lance pedal?) to the Zero’s. I had had Speedplay since the original Bryne model in the 80’s but wanted to try something different. Big mistake! I hated the DA pedal…always seemed to be struggling to get into the single sided entry point.

are you selling those d.a. pedals?

If you are going with Speedplay pedals I would get SIDI shoes because they have a very low profile with Speedplays. Also check out Tom’s review of shoes at http://bikesportmichigan.com/features/shoes.shtml
