New race for Seattle--Islander Aquathon

Here’s the lowdown:
Diletantte presents the Islander Aquathon
When: Wednesday, September 1st at 6:30 pm
Where: Luther Burbank Park on Mercer Island. (course stays entirely inside of park)
Who: You!
What: 2 race distances: short course (500m swim, 5k run) and long course (1k swim, 8k run)
You can find out more at BTO Multisports and you can register here. STers, use the code “STer” at registration and get 5 bucks off–good for the first 10 to sign up.

This race is going to be different from other multisport races for a couple of reasons:
–Timing: weekday afternoon, meaning it won’t take away from your weekend racing/training/plans
–Environmental responsibility: read about it here. I’m taking a page from Jeff Henderson and making stewardship and responsibility goals for this race.
–Strong club involvement: do you belong to a local club? Then contact me (see below) and let me know! I want clubs to be involved–participation, input, and more.
–Price: entry cost tops out at 50 bucks for the long course relay, non-early registration.
–Prizes: winners will get their prizes/recognition, but raffle prizes will be ample and awesome, including a round trip for two to the San Juan Islands!
–Bike Valet Parking: ride your bike to the race and you can valet park your bike. Seriously.

The whole reason I got into race directing (read about that here) was to put on races that I, as a triathlete, would want to do. This is all about the athlete. Give me your feedback, I crave it!

There will be copious prizes, stiff competition, and a fantastic time will be had by all, courtesy of generous support from local sponsors VO2 Performance Center, Dilettante Chocolates, and Fire in the Gut apparel.

You can email me with questions/concerns/accolades at porter@btomultisports.com

Thanks for reading and I will see you at the Islander!

shamelessly bumping…

As somebody who is not going to be able to do nearly enough bike training this summer, I have to say THANK YOU. Not nearly enough aquathlons out there, I’ll almost certainly be registering for this (pending a calendar check).

Edit: Also love that you’re doing a race photo as part of swag, as opposed to a shirt, which I have 239548 of.

What are you going to be capping registration at?

You are quite welcome. I’m hoping lots of people agree with you! Registration will be capped at 500–I will be quite pleasantly surprised if it gets that high, for a first year race–but we’ll see. Spread the word! Thanks.

update on race prizes–they will include, among other things, a trip for two on Kenmore Air (local seaplane travel company) and overnight accommodations on San Juan Island. details to follow on website soon!

I think I’ve got a couple people interested in the race.

Also, just an idea, might be cool to have a token prize for the swim leader; nothing big or anything, maybe a t-shirt or something.

Thanks for the suggestion. For the prize distribution, I am going to try something a bit different.

Overall top 5 men/women and top 3 in each age group will receive an award/prize for their placement, such as free entry to next year’s race, tech shirt from Fire in the Gut, but the juicy prizes will all be given as raffles and what I like to call the ‘freestyle category’. This includes things like fastest swim, fastest run, but could also be youngest competitor, oldest competitor, rocking the speedo, etc. Nothing wrong with rewarding the speedy, but I am thinking that people will dig getting a shot at the bigger prizes.

Also, thanks for spreading the word about the race!
