from illegally registered voters. Isn’t it interesting that there’s suddenly a crush of people registering to vote at the last minute. Apparently a lot of them aren’t legally entitled to do so, but by the time anyone can check into it, the election will be over.
" Can you please give me one name of someone who was denied the right to vote? "
Of course I can’t give you a name, but I can give you a reasonably non-biased source :
“Large numbers of Florida voters experienced frustration and anger on Election Day as they endured excessive delays, misinformation, and confusion, which resulted in the denial of their right to vote or to have their vote counted. While some maintain that what occurred in Florida was nothing out of the ordinary, but rather was simply amplified by the closeness of the election, the overwhelming evidence provided to the Commission proves otherwise.”
Whatever.
I have difficulty getting the name of a victim because voting is secret.
But you know that already and I can’t be bothered pretending that you want to have a discussion when you obviously don’t.
Unfortunately for you where I come from, Oregon, the government could give you my name along with who I voted for because we have tangible voting recorods. If you had your way everyone would have the record showing they voted for bush.
I know you claim to be impartial for the election tibbs, but you are obviously not. Now why don’t you admit that it won’t be bunnyman on your ballot but bush!
"Large numbers of Florida voters experienced frustration and anger on Election Day as they endured excessive delays, misinformation, and confusion, which resulted in the denial of their right to vote or to have their vote counted. "
And I suppose all these people were going to vote for Gore, right? Nobody who wanted to vote for Bush endured delays, misinformation, or confusion? The Bush voters were welcomed at the door by a uniformed concierge, treated to pastries and a manicure, and then allowed to vote twice, right?
Give me a break, already. Bush won. It’s the next election already, and some of you still can’t deal with it.
hey, I was just replying to the statement about people being denied their right to vote. Mr Tibbs said that no one was denied their right to vote, I presented the link from the Commission who determined that large numbers were denied.
I make no judgements about which way they would have voted.
Vote Democrat, Republican or Monster Loony Party if you wish, fine with me.
The Goreheads claim the Republicans stole the election, even though they know that’s a bald faced lie. The districts where the Dims claim minorities were denied the right to vote, and where Dim-witted seniors were befuddled by the butterfly ballots, were highly Dim controlled districts.
You may recall the controversy when a group of Dims (with one Republican) were trying to discern voter intent from hanging chads? High comedy, except for the seriousness of the issue.
"It didn’t happen!!! "
Fortunately we’ve got Tibbs to set the Commision straight. Here’s a nice quote from the report:
“Accordingly, the Commission is duty bound to report, without equivocation, that the analysis presented here supports a disturbing impression that Florida’s reliance on a flawed voter exclusion list, combined with the state law placing the burden of removal from the list on the voter, had the result of denying African Americans the right to vote. This analysis also shows that the chance of being placed on this list in error is greater for African Americans. Similarly, the analysis shows a direct correlation between race and having one’s vote discounted as a spoiled ballot. In other words, an African American’s chance of having his or her vote rejected as a spoiled ballot was significantly greater than a white voter’s. Based on the evidence presented to the Commission, there is a strong basis for concluding that section 2 of the VRA was violated.”
I think that the African American vote generally goes Democrat, but Florida might be different. Either way, naming individuals isn’t really important in this type of forum. I can’t name any victims of Saddam Hussein, but that doesn’t mean there weren’t any. I can’t name any illegal aliens, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t any. I can’t name a person who didn’t have their vote counted, but that doesn’t mean that didn’t happen too.
Guy, an African-American voting rights activist from Selma, Alabama was on a talk radio show the other night. Her name was JoAnne Bland, I think. She claimed that something to the effect that African-American voters in Florida are disenfranchised because many of them don’t have the ability to sort out technically complex ballots or touchscreen voting machines.
My jaw about hit the floor on that one. I think that if Bush wins in Florida, that it’s going to take at least a year to sort out the court fights and battles just to settle on a winner in the election.
Can you please give me one name of someone who was denied the right to vote?
I was denied in 2000. I am a registered republican in IL. I requested a absentee ballot a couple months before the election and didnt get it til after the election. Coincindence? Chicago is very demosocialist. And its funny no one cried or not many heard about the 100,000+ missing votes in Chicago in 2000! Liberal Media?
" So why does one have to register to be able to vote?
- what about making this thing mandatory? "
the answer to your first question is so that only citizens vote.
the answer to your second question is because in this country we are equally free to vote or not to vote. That’s how we run things here. This isn’t Belgium.
I’m not being alarmist here, but I can see the day coming when we’ll all have a national identity card. Shwarzenegger is getting pounded by immigration activists in California right now because he vetoed a bill that would’ve allowed undocumented (read “illegal”) immigrants to obtain a driver’s license.
Imagine what would happen if that i.d. card idea were approved…
Don’t get me started on imigration. If I were king for a day, it would be a long day of shipping all the illegal aliens right the hell out of this country and building appropriate border controls to ensure they weren’t flooding back in. How we allow this to keep going on is beyond me. These people are, every single on of them, criminals. They have broken US immigration law, and are now in this country profiting from their criminal acts. It drives me crazy when peopl want to call them “undocumented workers” or allow them to get drivers licenses. i would offer DLs, and when they showed up at the DMV, I’d pack’em in a u-haul and drive them back over the border.
I’d rather send out the compacent-unemployed welfare Americans who are far too content with their government subsidized apartment w/ Direct TV satellite on the side.
I would much rather see those that want to work to be shown in, and those that aren’t willing to work to be shown out.
Granted, there are financial problems with illegal immigrnats … but those problems are trumped by the financial problems (welfare, health care, gov’t aid, etc) that go to Americans that are able to work, but aren’t willing. There are certainly many more of the latter than there are of the former.
It’s not illegal to be complacent, unemployed or on welfare. It is illegal to be in this country without the appropriate documantation.
that are able to work, but aren’t willing. There are certainly many more of the latter than there are of the former.
Got numbers to support that?
You know why I love that story because New Mexico has been issuing drivers licenses to illegal immigrants for at least as long as I’ve lived here (5 years). I haven’t heard a peep about it (either for or against) by anyone in the state.
I agree. I was giving my version of “King for a Day” thing.
I know illegal immigrants and know the kids of illegal immigrants. I know welfare parents and the kids of welfare parents. One is illegal working, the other is legal plunder. Legal does not always equate to right (IMO).
Driving without your seat belt on is illegal too … it’s a dumb and unconstitutional law.
I live in the Midwest where poverty in rural and inner city areas are much, much, much greater issues than those regarding illegal immigrants (we have those too, more than one might expect … who would immigrate to Chicago-type winters?) … so that is where my perspective comes from. If I lived in the Cali, Texas, Florida, and/or NY … my perspective may be different.
If I were King for a Day I’d actually attack a much greater problem than immigration or welfare.
I know you probably think I’m some sort of right-wing reactionary or something like that, but I’m not. I actually think Vicente Fox of Mexico has a good idea with the “issue 'em a work permit, tax 'em, make 'em pay social security, and then send 'em home when they stop working” thing.
The devil will be in the details on that one, though. But it has promise. I mean, let’s be honest: how many of our own U.S. citizens are willing to do the types and kinds of work that most of these people come over here to do? Not many.
But: I don’t think that you should also neccessarily expect that any offspring you have over here should automatically be entitled to citizenship, either. I’ve seen pregnant women literally get off one of our aircraft arriving from Europe (a thru destination) and from some originator country like Nigeria or Bangladesh and grab onto a chair in our Federal Inspection Station and try to induce labor just to have a baby born here, which would entitle the baby to citizenship and the mother to a resident alien card, eventually.
Not that it matters. Those Diebold voting machines with no paper trails will filter out a lot of those Kerry voters ![]()
