Our new poll (right hand column of this page) is on the politics of Slowtwitchers. The reason for the poll is this: I’ve got a few interview requests out there for public figures on the national stage. (An example is Scott Brown - new senator from MASS - because he’s a triathlete; another is Ray LaHood, the transportation secty). In the 11 years Slowtwitch has been alive we’ve never polled this. But, I think it’s appropriate to let these public figures know how Slowtwitchers skew politically, if I’m asked during the course of interviews.
If you don’t think this is an appropriate question to poll, please indicate so (and there’s a place on the poll to indicate this preference). If there sufficient discontent with the poll’s subject matter, I’ll replace with a poll asking you what cycling shoes you’re wearing, or, some similar thing.
In any case, we will NOT be debating politics on the forum (unless you wander over to the Lavender Room, where those topics are acceptable). Please respect the prohibition of political topics on the main forum! Thanks for understanding.
I think the poll is interesting…but inherently flawed. For example, there is no place to indicate Libertarian.
Also, the terms you’ve given us to chose from are all loaded, and somewhat asymmetrical. (Where is the “unapologetic righty”?)
I propose a two dimensional poll like one that showed up in this thread in the LR a while back where your political persuasion was a point on a 2-D graph with economic and social axes.

My thoughts exactly. Which box do I check if I keep a picture of Ronald Reagan under my pillow and kiss it goodnight every evening, but, I think the Tea Parties are a bit goofy?
x2. I’ve seen that before and I don’t think it would be too complicated to set it up for the site. It would be the most accurate for the purpose, as well.
Edit: Those comments are in reference to the 2D graph.
Like the poll, like the categories. On my blog I self-identify as a liberal Unitarian scientist, so I’m pretty sure that makes me an “unapologetic lefty”. Oh, that and my love of Sarah Palin jokes
Now excuse me while I go practice kissing on a Barack Obama poster…
okay, there you go, anti-tea bag libertarian. your option has been added.
a simple “unapologetic righty” or “unapologetic conservative” to counterbalance the “unapologetic lefty” will get me to cast a vote. I like that you added a libertarian option but I think all the variants of “tea party” are not relative (though insightful into your views)…
“a simple “unapologetic righty” or “unapologetic conservative” to counterbalance the “unapologetic lefty” will get me to cast a vote.”
if i give you that, then other righties are going to be upset because they’ll want to cast a vote for both tea partier and unapologetic righty. i can’t undo the tea party option, because a lot of people have already clicked it. so, if you don’t find a category to slot yourself in, would you like me to make a “righty not aligned with the other righty categories” category?

no thanks I’ll just respectfully choose the respectfully choose not to answer answer
“Great response. Which did you go with. I’m in the same boat.”
my mistake. i thought i’d added the custom selection JSA wanted. apparently i haven’t drilled down enough. why don’t you tell me what category to add to the poll, so that you’re comfortable clicking a radio button.
