Has there ever been an iron distance race in New Orleans? I see there in a half this year.
Thanks

Never an Iron Distance race there. THere was an OLY going for a few years . I’m not sure that there was ever much triathlon there. Bike routes are pretty limited and the roads are pretty rough. The lake is not too bad for open water swimming though.

Speaking of roads…I drove the half iron course when I was down there for the 1/2 marathon the weekend before last. Besides a few rough spots in the beginning on the bridges, road conditions seemed fantastic. Granted I was in a car but conditions looked really good. Most of Chef Menteur going out toward Lake Catherine is new pavement. Interesting new homes out there too. I’d venture to say 90% of the bike course is excellent road conditions but I may have messed up the beginning of the course b/c Haynes was closed to civilian car traffic just past the lakefront airport so I went a different way that I presumed to be the course but I could have been way off. Definitely watch the road conditions on any bridges - - there was one out just before the turn-around that had a hole in the middle of it.
I’m thinking one could definitely be done though if someone just extended much of the half iron bike for 28 more miles. Plenty of room to do the swim in Lake Pontchartrain and obviously marathon routes are quite possible too - - they could “borrow” the half iron run route and make the French Quarter the turn-around instead of the finish.
The bike route is great. Rode the whole thing plus some extra this past weekend and besides one or two small rough spots 99% of it is great. We (GNOtri) will be riding it (the route) every weekend until the race.
What’s the elevation like? I’m planning for “Flat as a pancake”. What about the winds?
Dont know about the road conditions but the wind starts here in late Feburary and blows until middle of may so prepare for the wind.

It is Flat as a pancake for 99% of the bike. There is one bridge and one overpass that you will go over twice each. There is another overpass but it is almost non existant. If you are from anywhere that has even the slightest hills you probably will not even notice the bridge and overpass. There will be wind but it most likely will not be too bad in the morning but may get worse as the land heats up.
