I am writing from Montreal, Canada and I just joined the forum today.

I am 31 and here is my plan.
Summer 2018: Marathon
Summer 2019: 70.3
Summer 2020: Ironman

I would love to hear tips and thoughts. And ideas for a first bike. I definitely cannot afford a dedicated tri bike. I was thinking of getting a basic carbon bike and putting TT bars on it.

Thank you for your input,

T

Pro Tip #1: Get lean, target 2.2lb/in (male).

This is a really generic question for three entirely different events with their own peculiarities. I suggest you start doing keyword searches in the forums and come up with specific questions. Even the bike question is a head-scratcher. What is your FTP? What is your W/kg? How is your handling? Are you going to do lots of hills or flats? Trust me, use the search tool and many of your questions will be answered.

I agree that it is super generic. But I’m just starting out. I want to be more specific as the time comes. I just want to get moving and put my foot in the water for now.

I’ll play!

Can you swim? How fast can you swim 100 (yards or meters)? 500?

Do you own a bike? How often do your y ride it?

Do you run? How often? Miles/ kilometers per week?

Any racing history in any of the above sports?

What’s your budget for the bike?

Happy training!
But I do not think that a dedicated TT bike must be more expensive than a racing bike rebuilt to tt-bike. Only if you HAVE already a racing bike. But if you have to buy a bike anyway, buy a basic tt bike straight away.
That is, if you don’t need a racing bike. I don’t. I only have a tt bike and a town/ gravelbike.
