New lightweight wheel

Nobody noticed the new Lightweight wheels Pro rider Michael Goehner was using in Hawaii?

Seems to be a different wheel then exposed at the Eurobike and Interbike show.

Bye Rob

Layup looks the same- just a few more spokes.

I always wanted a set of Lightweight or Adas. Those are the super high-end only wheels I haven’t ridden that I would love to experience. But I could have a used Rolex for the price of a pair…

Maybe Goehner was to heavy for 8 spokes :0)

Even when I was a 120# hill climber- 8 spokes would scare me to death!!!

Can’t imagine the flex going up hill with them or breaking down hill at 50+ mph. I Guess you could call them a Octospoke :0)

those aren’t normal spokes, there may not be any flex at all.

who knows.

i think its kind of silly though, given the diminishing returns when you get to around 12 spokes.

No matter how good your carbon-to-resin ratio is, you just can’t get enough carbon to structurally reinforce that small of a spoke. Me thinks the 8 spokes is for show only.

Now- if they were the width of hacksaw blades, then we’re talking a different story.

I rode a wheel with titanium spokes years and years ago, and I hated the feel. Yes, I was 120# then!!!

On a somewhat related note: anyone remember the carbon spokes with metal nipples and ends? That spelled disaster.

Lightweight and Ada used carbon string for their spokes (or at least they used to) that they would tie at the rim, true, then laminate (an over-simplified explanation). While they are plenty strong, 8 spokes would still make me uneasy.

I would hope some engineering went into the 8 spokes :0)
Would love to hash out the engineering in the 8 spokes but can you guys do it I have to get some riding in before the MRI of my shoulder andnthe kiddies finishing school. Plus it will take me 10 minutes to get dressed for the 40 degree weather!! Can you guys find the engineering data for the spokes so I have some interesting reading when I get back? Since you are sitting around doing nothing that is :0)

I am certain that 8 spokes is plenty stiff for a 120# rider, especially those spokes.

But again- I’d want a bit more security than that.

I’m pretty sure Badman used to use a LW with 6 spokes and a lower pro rim. The flexibility of a wheel has more to do with the spokes tension than the spokes untensioned flexibility. Spinergy uses spokes that can be tied in knots and they are fine in a built wheel.

Every time I see a new Lightweight prototype I am reminded of George Hincapie’s near-fatal crash due to a catastrophic failure of his prototype lightweights.

when was that. I remember a pro crash but that was attributed to the mechanic taking some pawls out of the hub to further lighten it. I didn’t think that was George though.
