I wanted to make a plug for a new iron distance race being held in my old stopping grounds in Nova Scotia Canada on July 1st 2012.
The bike and run routes set out for this race are stellar. The bike course is fast - flat on the front half and rolling for the back half, the pavement is in suburb condition and the back half is almost empty of vehicles. Much of the run is on well graded trails in a large urban park or along lakes. It’s going to be a great race so if you’ve been wanting to visit Nova Scotia - this is a great reason to make the trip.
Just for clarification, as you will see from our website at EpicDartmouth.com, we have not only a full Iron-distance, but three separate events:
AQUA Dartmouth - 3.8k swim, 180k cycle
EPIC Dartmouth - 3.8k swim, 180k cycle, 21.1k run
IRON Dartmouth - 3.8k swim, 180k cycle, 42.2k run
The full story is on our website, but the initial distance and the title race of our event, EPIC Dartmouth, was inspired by Dev Paul’s EPICMAN Lake Placid - a distance that someone could do as a training race in support of a late summer full Iron-distance event.
This is an event for Age Groupers, and we are very keenly focused on making this an event that once completed, automatically goes on a participant’s ‘must-do’ list for the following year.
We also recognize we are a bit off the beaten path for some folks, but the compensation is that we reside in one of the most beautiful vacation spots in the world. To help out, we’ve put up $50 in travel discount for folks in the US and other parts of Canada, and $100 to assist anyone coming from outside North America (though if you’re in North America, the best deal is to sign up this month for $75 off!).
Come for the race, and stay for the vacation, or come for a vacation and stay for the race - either way we are going to go full out to make sure you have an event that you want to repeat in 2013.
Surely guys will make the trip for the Nova Scotia Beer and after party in Halifax!!!
Tim and I are working on adding another “innovation to this event”. Stay tuned for more news once Tim sorts out some logistics…seriously, this is going to be a very cool event. Maybe Macca should show up because this is the type of thing he likes to do!!!
I signed up for the Halifax 101 race a few years ago (remember that?), which was cancelled. We ended up going out and riding to Peggy’s cove anyways. Then… Lower deck became the home away from home for a few days
Crap…ANOTHER awesome looking race I want to do now. I hate to say this but the choice of races out there now is fantastic!!! I just wish I had A. more money and B. more time to dedicate to racing/traveling. This one is definitely on the seriously considering list.
Thanks for the notice, that looks great, I think that will finally make me do the trip to NS.
I know the ferry service from Bar Harbor to Yarmouth is no longer available. Are there other options?
I read once something like you can drive up New Brunswick, and take the ferry from Saint John to Digby. Or just driver a round to get to NS?
Any input is appreciated.
Thanks for the nice words. We have a beautiful spot and a great city (and yes a lot of great Maritime Beers!).
We are totally excited about sharing this event with anyone that can join us. Heck, if the race date doesn’t work with your schedule, just plan your vacation here over Canada Day - we’d love to have your knowledge and assistance in our volunteer team on course.
We are on Facebook and Twitter, and I’ll post updates there as we proceed towards race day:
This looks like a pretty cool race. Looks like I am going to have to decide between this one and IM Louisville
$250 (Early Entry Fee), or $700? Seems like a no-brainer. This looks like an awesome race!
A bunch of the people I usually train with have already signed up for Louisville and it is only around 4 hours away. Those are the only two reason I am even debating this because you’re correct it is a no-brainer just looking at the price alone.
Damn you people!! The week after IMCDA…I’ve been waiting for a 140.6 to happen somewhere in the Maritimes (I grew up in West Lawrencetown, outside Dartmouth).
Can’t make 2012, but I will definitely see you in 2013…hope you guys get a great turnout for the inaugural event…
