My girlfriend and I burned through 3 (and it looks like 4 soon) 2nd gen Shuffles.
Ours did not like sweat at all.
For a product marketed to ‘active’ people, it should have been much more water resistant.
Try the SwimMan-modified shuffles (www.swimman.com). It’s pricey ($150), but fully waterproofed. Since I swim with mine; I also have no worries about sweat, stem room, etc. I’ve had mine about 3 years with no issues.
My 3rd gen shuffle just lasted about a month and a half, now dead due to sweat on the headphones.
I’ll return mine, if I can just to replace the headphones. I’m not sure Apple really cares, looking at the reviews and the fact that they haven’t done a thing about this design flaw.
Here’s a quote from their press release about the fit of the earbuds:
"The Image S4i utilizes the company’s exclusive oval ear tips that provide comfortable long-term wear. Unlike circular-shaped designs that put stress on the pressure points inside the ear, Klipsch’s oval ear tips naturally fit the contours of the ear canals. These ear tips also offer superior passive noise-cancellation, blocking out almost all ambient noise and providing excellent bass.
“Once you have the right fit and seal, these headsets are virtually impossible to feel,” said Mark Blanchard, senior acoustic design engineer for Klipsch and inventor of the company’s oval ear tips. “When we began studying three-dimensional ear impressions, it was discovered that nearly everyone has an oval-shaped ear canal. We couldn’t believe that no one else had yet considered the anatomical shape of the ear canal when designing in-ear headphones.”
Fail. Regardless of whether you like the ear buds fit, you are bound to the Apple ones until the after market catches up. With my current shuffle I have been through 4 sets of ear buds due to wires failing from repeated flex and general wear from heavy use. Also, depending on how you like to route your wires, the controls on the wire could be a deal breaker for usability and do you really want to fart around pulling on your ear bud wires while you are running?
Fine with me, I’ll keep buying up the “obsolete” ones on ebay for pennies on the dollar.
Bump the capacity of the existing package, leave the controls on the pod where they belong. Was it really too big? Yeah I didn’t think so either. The design concept has peaked and is now in the change for change sake era. See “New Coke”, “Black Sabbath with Dio” and “Electronic Bicycle Shifting” - Mavic ZAP anyone?
I’m not sure about the shuffle because I’d like to have a little more control. I got a 2gig sansa clip for $35 and it works great. On random you can rate your songs which put them in the mix more often. It clips right on your belt and you can use any headphones with it.
