New Garmin SDK "Connect IQ"

I was going to post this in the 920XT speculation thread but decided this needs a separate thread. The possibilities are endless and the direction that they needed to go in!

Per DC Rainmaker:

Garmin announces ability to develop apps on wearables, with Connect IQ

Yeah…this is very cool.
Strava app - real time results while segment hunting without a phone
BSX Insight/running kinematics footpod apps- They can simply write an app instead of making hardware when their profiles are not yet supported

Hopefully it’ll extend to the Edge platform and then Best bike split could be a little cleaner, and perhaps adaptive mid-ride?

Thanks for posting. There’s no way the 920XT will use apps, so good that you posted separately. DCRainmaker said it well “Ultimately the question here will be whether Garmin can move fast enough in creating enough hooks and interest for developers to outpace what will be a (fast or slow) movement of customers to other watches like the Apple Watch.”

Am I missing something here? Wouldn’t they have been better to announce this after the 920 had been released and sold some units? Seem’s to me like a good reason to persevere with the 910 until new devices hit the market. I still wish that they would release SDK’s for some of their old stuff, can’t see how it wouldn’t create new interest in a product that all they have to do is bang a few more out, eg no more development costs required. A quick look at Apple indicates, does it not, that they don’t seem to have any trouble selling new products, despite the fact that users can pretty much do whatever they want with the old products.

Pretty sure the 920 will incorporate this. If you look at the timeframe - it says early 2015 - which is when the 920 is meant to ship. Should be released next week but ship next year. I think the 510/810 are due to be updated in early 2015 as well - so I am sure they will incorporate it as well.

Do you know they are shipping next year?
For the short while RRS had the watch up (for pre-sale) on their site, customers had commented that they received e-mails saying that it would ship October 2nd.
Was that just RRS “BS” ?
If so … that would suck for the people that pre-ordered and potentially sold what they had thinking the 920 would ship this year (October in fact).

Pretty certain they are just releasing the watch at Kona - but won’t ship until the new year - my local shop in Australia said February/March - so probably a little bit before over in the US. I can’t see them releasing and shipping next week. Outside the recent VivoSmart - they normally have a lag on announcements to shipping (910, 620, Fenix, VivoFit, Vector etc were all released and shipped 3-4 months later).

That would be good. Either way this would definitely seem to be a step forward for Garmin.

It would be a surprising move if the imminent 920XT *doesn’t *support this, Garmin will have torpedoed their own product just before it launches. They’re basically saying “in four months we’re launching a revolutionary new platform that that’s going to turn the whole industry on it’s head, offer a whole new world of connectivity, 3rd party app integration and user customization. But for now here’s a $500 watch that doesn’t support any of that”.

But then again, it would be very easy to release a 920XT that brings together the various features of the FR620 and fenix2 into a decent package designed specifically for triathletes, so maybe that’s just what we’ll see.

They would also be saying “and there will be a new model in spring 2015 that does support it”.

My bet is it will be supported.

The coolest thing about this SDK is that I can write my own code to disable the altimeter when it breaks. Now how cool is that ??

maybe not supported at first, but with future software updates it must surely.

My thoughts exactly.
