New Front wheel for P5

Hey together,

I am thinking about purchasing a new front wheel for the coming season. I am riding a P5 and currently owning a 404 front wheel and rear wheels: 404, 808, Super 9 disc (all of them are clincher and FC).

My main courses are very flat but can be windy. In windy conditions I would guess to go with the 404 in the front and depending on how windy it is 808 or disc in the rear.

Now the question is to go with a 808 front wheel or thinking about a trispoke - maybe hed h3?! have read some threads about it but not smarter by now.

Thanks for your help

On my P5 I’m running the Zipp disc in back and when it’s not too windy the 1080 goes on…when the wind is up there I slap on my 404. Love the 1080!

I’d probably go with the 808 in the situations you’re describing.

Since you have it, I’d go with the 808fc all the time. The Old h3 is only good with tires that are impossible to find now and we don’t have numbers on the new one yet.

Do you have any data on the easy to find Conti Grand Prix 4000s II? Why would you discount it? When I measured it mounted, there wasn’t much difference between it and the Bonty AW19.

I didn’t realize they are making a 20mm now. So I haven’t seen any data on it yet, I just know when you put a bigger tire on that wheel it kills the aeroness of it pretty quick. I think the 808fc is still a better choice overall. I’ve raced on the H3, 808, 808fc, and 1080, over the years, so all the major deep front wheels. The stability in cross winds of the 808FC is really that much better, its the first thing I noticed. You’d get hit with a cross wind and you could feel it but the wheel didn’t start moving. Also I don’t mind the comfort part of the the H3, but a 20mm is still gonna be harsher than riding a 23 or 25 on the FC wheels, which could affect some people’s decision on it.

Conti Supersonic has a 20mm. The Bontrager Aerowing 19mm is the one that’s no longer available.

we don’t have numbers on the new one yet.

Slower than the old Hed3 at low yaw with a 19mm tire, similar drag numbers to the Stinger 9.

It rolled slow. Only the 20mm SS is viable option for the old H3.

Since there’s little to no difference between the 404 and 808 at low (typical) yaw angles, it doesn’t really make sense to get an 808 front as it’s only faster precisely when you don’t want the extra depth.
