Does anyone here have experience with changing forks on a P2K. I went to relube my headset and did not like what I saw when I pulled the fork out. The spacer seems to have cut into the steerer tube more than I care for. The stress concentration on the 1" tube seems too high for my liking. Because of this I will probably change out the fork. The thought of a face plant at 40mph when the steerer tube goes is not very pleasant. I am riding a 53cm 650 version from several years ago, so I think the OEM fork had a 40mm rake. Does anybody know if this is correct?
I am looking at the Easton EC90 Aero fork, it has a 38mm rake / offset. Does anyone have any experience / feedback with how much this 2mm drop changes the handling? I am just wondering how much freedom I have looking for forks or if I should stick with the same geometry.
You wouldn’t think 2 mm of rake would make a difference but on some bikes it does. My Lemond road bike comes with a 45 mm rake but I swapped out the original Bontrager Carbon Race fork for a 43 mm Reynolds Ouzo Pro. i posted here about this and several people told me not to do it. I noticed immediately that the bikes handling characteristics were changed, being less precise and seemed to “understeer” somewhat. I then swapped the 43 mm fork for a 45 mm Ouzo Pro Peleton and noticed improved handling like it was before with the original fork.
I think it probably depends on the bike. Some frames are more tempermental to a 2 mm change in fork rake than others. I’ve never changed the original fork on my P2K so can’t really tell you much.
No real preference for the Easton fork, I was mostly just wondering if anyone had any experience with the 2mm rake change. I have found the Easton for cheaper though so far. The main reaon for change is the damage to the steerer tube on the old fork and concern about face plants. I’m also not 100% sure if 40mm is the offset on the fork. I know that is what the new ones have, but I don’t have the original specs and don’t know if they have changed. I guess I will email Cervelo to verify since Gerard hasn’t posted.
by the way, i happen to be selling my reynolds ouzo pro aero that i just bought this year because it won’t fit my new frame. plenty of room for a 53cm bike though. it’s posted in the classifieds:
I have read that and several other articles, which is a lot of why I am looking to see if anyone has any experience with how noticable of a change a 2mm differnece would be. I am not sure if it would make the bike “more stable” or push it to “sluggish” Kind of hooping with how many people out here seem to ride cervelo’s and there love of changing bike parts, someone would have had this experience.
Yet another non-answer to your question. Sorry about that. But I didn’t see it and have to ask…why are you sold on the idea of changing the fork rake, why not a new 40mm?
