I can’t believe I am posting something re discovery channel before Messr. Demerly, but I saw this on IMDB. Seems interesting, or at least entertaining.

********Seasoned survival expert Bear Grylls takes on the worst that nature can dish out in “Man Vs. Wild”, airing tonight at 9 p.m. ET/PT on the Discovery Channel. In each episode of “Man Vs. Wild”, Bear strands himself in popular wilderness destinations and finds his way back to civilization, demonstrating local survival techniques along the way. Bear escapes quicksand in the Moab Desert, navigates dangerous jungle rivers in Costa Rica, crosses ravines in the Alps and survives sharks off the coast of Hawaii. See the photos and visit the official site. “Man Vs. Wild” is on tonight, 9 p.m. ET/PT on the Discovery Channel.
When I was there for the IMWC a couple weeks ago we did a dive with sharks of North shore of Oahu, one of the coolest things I have done. We were with 3 15 ft Tiger sharks. Unless that guy was dressed as prey and covered in blood not sure what he had to “survive”. Fearing being attacked by a shark is like being afraid of going in the rain for fear of being struck by lightning.
Are you sure they were Tigers, not Reef sharks? Tigers are known to be aggressive, I’m surprised anyone would do a dive to see them. But you’re right, mostly shark survival is a non issue in Hawaii. There are rarely deaths from shark attacks (I didn’t say never), usually those that do get attacked are surfers.
No, I am sure, we were caged but our guide was not, he swam with them and every time he got in the water they would vanish or at least leave our visibility. When he got back on the boat they came right back. It was amazing. We talked to a marine biologist later in our trip who said it is rare to see three together, especially that big.
This company also has video of a GW off the coast which is super cool!
my son loves sharks. he has this picture in his room that he had me print off the internet. pretty cheap decorating. and his soccer team is called the Blue Sharks.
I saw the show last night and although the guy looks in really good shape, I do not see him as being any better than “survivorman” Les Stroud. He did a bit more on the physical side but Stroud carries his own equipment (camaras and the like) and there is no one there to help him out of a jam if one arises.
Having spent a bit of time in the southern Utah area, I can say it gets hot and it would be very easy to bake in the heat. (no more so than here in AZ) The most sensible thing “bear” said was that normally you should stay put and wait for rescue. All in all, not impressed by the program.
Me either really. I thought it seemed staged and layed out in advance. I also questioned the logic of some of what he did. I thought the other shows of this style were better. I will watch another one to see how it goes but this one didn’t do it for me.
