In a little over a month I will be competing in my first triathlon, and I’m a bit nervous about a few things. Since I’m not planning on sporting the “swimmers speedo” is there some other suit that you can get that works well for all three events?
I’ll tackle my issues one at a time so be prepared for more silly questions as the date get nearer.
Thanks ahead of time for your help in this.
Welcome to Slowtwitch…you can ask as many silly Q’s as you want (we all have), but you may find the answers you need by using the “search posts” function. Regardless, it’s getting more & more rare to find athletes sporting a speedo throughout the whole event. Most opt for a one or two piece tri-specific suit which can be worn for all three disciplines. What distance is your first tri, and what were you intending to wear on the bike & run?
Tri shorts are kind of like cycling shorts without the “running with a diaper on” feel. They do have some padding but not as much (i.e., made to run). You can get them at most stores that sell tri related gear or online. It is a worthy investment. I’m personally not a big fan of the one piece suit but a lot of folks are. You might also want to consider a tri top. They are tight fitting and also go right under your wetsuit.
I started off tris wearing bike shorts and those tight under armour/nike sleeveless shirts for the swim and bike, and changing into a tank-top for the run (that I’d pre-pinned my bib # to). Discovered tri shorts one race later. Discovered tri tops a few races after that, along with a “race belt.” Now I like the Zoot tri shorts and their separate tops. But, it’s embarassing how many of my clothes my housekeeper thinks belong in my wife’s closet.
