New 2 Tri Event - Suggestions Please

Gidday Slowtwitchers

We (being the Mad Cows Racing Team) are planning a New to Tri event here in Davis, CA in a couple of weeks. Our aim is to really to encourage newcomers into the sport of triathlon and emphasize the role of exercise as part of a healthy lifestyle.

We also want to demystify the sport of triathlon for the general public as well as provide guidance for members who are relatively new to triathlon.

If there any slowtwitchers out there with excellent suggestions for topics, resources, props that that would be useful for a new to tri event I would love to hear your suggestions. I am sure many other triathlon clubs have organized similar events so they should have a good idea of what works and what does not.

Another aim of this meeting is to try and soften our image - you cannot imagine the number of people I have heard say they are too intimidated to join the Mad Cows because they think we are all elite Ironman racers.

I designed an “Intro to Triathlon” course to be taught at a local community college in the evening. It was two nights from 6:30-9:30 PM. Covered the basics of triathlon and gave newbies a good list of sources/resources both locally and on the net. Unfortunately it didn’t get a huge turn out despite good promotion but I’m offering it again and hope for more folks this time.

If you’re interested in doing something like this I’m quite willing to send you a copy of the course outline. It’ll save you a bit of work.
