Looking for simple directions on how to glue a tire on and suggestions? Glue the rim or the tire first? How much glue should you apply? Put air in the tire before stretching it onto the rim or inflate the tire after you put it on the rim?
Is this a new rim as well as a new tire?
Stretch tire on new clean rim, inflate to full pressure, set aside
Thin even coat on rim. Let Dry.
Repeat once.
Take tire off clean rim. Coat base coat evenly. Tufo’s take almost an entire tube of glue. Semi inflate to maintain shape and so glue on base tape hardens while tire is correctly shaped.
Let dry.
Put one more even coat on rim. Let it get tacky. Now put tubular on rim. Try not to remove a lot of glue. Inflate fully after tire is evenly placed on rim.
here ya go TK!
see if this helps… can you take kimbo215 on sunday?
I think that this is a well done set of instructions.
Lots of posts on this topic already, you should be able to find reams of discussions if you do a search of the archives.
Step 1: Stretch tire. Some stand on the tube and pull with their arms. I prefer to sit down with my knees against my chest, put the tube around me, and push out evenly with my legs, back and arms. I also put the tire on the rim once after stretching and air it up.
Step 2: Place a thin layer of glue on the tire and on the rim. Let it dry for 24 hours. I usually use an entire tube of glue for each tire in total. Half a tube for each layer gluing.
Step 3: After the first layer is completely dry, place a thin layer of glue on the tire and the rim and let it sit for 20 minutes until tacky and not fluid (if it is still fluid, it will drip all over your rims).
Step 4: Put the tire on the rim. It takes some doing to get it on, which is where the practice in Step 1 comes in handy. My dirty little secret (shhhhh): I use a soft plastic tire tool for the final flip on stubborn tires.
Some posters will tell you to put on 3 or even 4 layers of glue on. I think this is completely silly. 2 layers is plenty. I had a pre-race flat once before a road race and I raced on an unglued spare for 100 miles in the lead pack on a hilly, technical course. No problem.
The first time can be a little frustrating, but it gets easier.
The Zipp website also has good step-by-step gluing instructions.
I have a fool-proof plan. I buy the tires, stretch them, then hand stretched tires and wheels to my coach. Get them back a day or 2 later, all glued and ready to go
Don’t think I can take kimbo215 on sunday…the last time I had a good workout was St Anthonys. I can’t even ride the bike for an hour without the back hurting. Disney Half will be fun…just going out for the workout and finish with Corey and Frankie (my boys) with me.
Park Tools has an illustrated article on mounting/gluing tubulars: http://www.parktool.com/repair_help/tubular.shtml
.
I seem to be hitting all the tire treads today…
I usually just put one layer of glue on the rim and one on the tire. Let them dry for a few hours and mount. I don’t really see the need for multiple layers of glue. I’ve never had a tire come anywhere close of coming off. Although if I knew the course had a lot of gnarly decents or something I would perhaps put on an extra layer : )
I would inflate the tubies to glue but never needed to stretch. I’ve heard that the Contis fit tight though so I would stretch those. No problems with Tufos or Vittorias. Leave a little air in the tire while you mount and let out as needed. When you’re done, pump it up and make sure you have it centered. You won’t so work it around with your hands until you do.
